Audio not being imported with video

Post by lauralee »

Forgive me if this has been covered, but I have been searching througout the boards and in the FAQ and the help screens for Video Studio 8 and I have not found the answer. I am working with Video Studio 8 under Windows XP. Unfortunately, I have a rebuilt computer and was never told exactly what equipment is in it. I use an external DVD drive that works well. I have a video that was made of a theatrical production. This was made into an MPG file, which was edited to a DVD using WinDVD Creator 2. (I do not have this software). I do not want to start from scratch with the original MPG because we did a lot of work on it, but I wanted to make a few edits and so I purchased Video Studio 8. I am able to import the video from the DVD, but it does not import or play the audio track. How do I get the audio to import along with the video? Thank you for your help.

It is quite possible that the audio track is Dolby AC-3. If that is the case then VS8 does not support it. There is a plugin available on the Ulead site which would enable VS8 to handle Dolby or you could upgrade to VS9 which has Dolby support built in. First check to see what format the sound is recorded in.

Go to the Ulead site and look up VS8, then find plugins that are suitable for VS8. Alternatively you could upgrade to VS9. I think the plugin is around $30 and upgrading is not much more than that so I'll let you work out the economics.

can't find it

Post by lauralee »

I'm sorry, I can't seem to find this plug in anywhere. I'm getting very frustrated with this program. I've already done several edits with a trial version of Win DVD just to try to get the clip into a format Ulead will read-- I'm starting to wonder why I didn't buy WinDVD instead, and since the cost of the plug in is not much less than the cost of that program... hmmm...

Does anyone know if there is a reason to use Video Studio over Win DVD? I chose it because of reviews, but I'm having a hard time with it so far.

I just had a look at the Ulead site and the AC-3 plugin has disappeared. I really don't know how you can find it. They may have removed it because the new version, VS9, has dolby support built in. Don't know much about WinDVD but I do know that VS is a very powerful product for your money. Hopefully someone on the board may have a record of the link to the plugin. Wish I could have been of more help.
Hold on for a bit until some others get to see this post. There is a free codec available that will decode the Dolby sound for you which will allow you to work on your project. It only restriction is that you will not be able to output back to Dolby. I just can't remember where the site is that has it.

Well, Number one in order to use "Windvd Creator " that supports dolby audio you
need to purchase the platinum version. (Not the Gold version $49.00)
Platinum is $99.00

If you have VideoStudio_8 then order the retail boxed upgrade for VideoStudio_9.. The download is very large (not suggested).
Even at that VideoStudio 9 is $99.00 full retail price and you also get
MovieFactory 3 with it for free.
.
In my opinion VideoStudio_9 is a better choice.

It depends how deep you want to go into video_editing.
VideoStudio_9 lets you customize all parameters etc.
VideoStudio_9 is very powerful.
Windvd is a simple program.

Hope this helps,

Just a bit frustrating when I just saved up and bought this yesterday to find that I need to spend another $100 before I can send out our demo tape.

Hi Lauralee

If you bought VS 8 from ulead they should give you a free upgrade to VS 9

If you bought it elsewhere, go get your money back, version 9 has been out for some time now.

In the meantime download the Trial VS 9 which supports Digital Dolby.

I understand that its frustrating..really! Dolby never used to be a problem for cams because no-one had it! Then some video cameras got it and the software for home editing became far more accesable through faster, more powerful computers and then. and then, and then! It's all evolving quite quickly. For what you want I think you should upgrade your VS8 to VS9. I know that's not a happy thing but for $50 or so you will have what you want and technically you can sit for a year and be covered.

lauralee,
Just to make you feel more comfortable getting the VS9 upgrade. I had exactly the same problem as you -- using VS8, video import ok, no audio. Getting VS9 fixed the problem and I now have a beautiful copy of the original video. VS9 has some other very nice enhancements.

Version 9 will not open the file at all

Post by lauralee »

I upgraded to version 9, and now I can't open the file at all-- audio or video. It says it is a "type mismatch."
