[BUG?] Nikon D800E NEFs not recognised... D800 NEFs OK...

Post by FotoLars »

Hi!

It seems as ASP 1.0.1.10 does not recognise NEFs from Nikon D800E.

I have tried with the pre-production NEFs available at http://pcfoto.biz/na-prvi-pogled-nikon-d800e, as well as with one file that one of the very first lucky production-unit owners in Japan sent me. All these files open nicely in Lightroom 4 and Nikon Capture NX2.

The D800 NEFs I have encountered so far all open nicely in ASP 1.0.1.10.

EDIT:
I have uploaded the nef file I received from Japan to the upload service.

I'm sorry for this but it would help if you send a sample raw files via http://aftershotpro.com/AfterShotUploader/

Hi!

Yes, I did so yesterday, shortly after the initial posting, as soon as I got permission from the original photographer to upload his photo, and then added the note about the file being uploaded, under Edit in my original posting...

The oldfashioned upload service at Corel allows files of maximum 50 MB to be uploaded - which means that they very efficiently filter out any uncompressed raw files from the new Nikon D800 series cameras that people might try so send them. I asked them to increase this small file size limit...

some of them can be found at

What makes you think that?
The D800 is supported, and it has the same pixel size...
The D800E is supposed to work as well.
Arbitrary MP limits apply only to TIFF and JPG.

The size issue is not a limit in ASP itself. It is (as the OP reports) in the maximum size you can upload to Corel.

Anyone know if there is a resolution to this issue.
I have a D800e any cannot view any files from it.
I sent a bug report to corel support quite a long time ago and uploaded a sample file as requested.
A few days ago support contacted me and mentioned that it was a confirmed bug in ASP and directed me to a patch download link that was supposed to fix the issue. However the download link points to the existing version which fails to load the D800e files.
Just wondering if I am missing something obvious or if others are still having this issue.

Just picked my D800E. No RAW files recognized. Disappointing. REALLY disappointing considering how long Corel has known about this issue. Not a class operation IMO.

Just a thought:
It doesn't have to be a bug in ASP but could well be one in the Nikon file.
I had similar experience with my Ricoh GRD IV - the camera wrote wrong meta-datas which made it impossible for ASP to read the file. A firmware update fixed it.

If you change the model name with exiftools/exifToolsGui from D800E to D800 then it works. It's just the letter E which makes the trouble.

It makes more sense for Corel to fix the problem with the "E" at their end than for every user to change every file before they can use ASP. How hard can it be? So hard that it's taken over two months and still not fixed? Come on, Corel - give us a break. What in the H is taking so long? ASP doesn't seem to be much of a priority with you.

This is not an error in the D800E's files to include the E - that's what the camera is and other programs/scripts that I use depend on knowing it's a D800E and not a D800. Without the "E" every program thinks both cameras are the same.

I do not think Corel intends to deliver small fixes quickly, but rather accumulated fixes every few months or so. So I would not expect any short term fixes however trivial they are.
I have been wondering why the HR fix that was implemented quite quickly after the initial release had to wait several months to come out. And that is a fix that affects all users not just a tiny percentage like support for a specific camera would.

So far it looks like releases roughly once a quarter, or perhaps three times a year. Could be better, could be worse. Personally I'm not buying a new camera until I see support for it in the major s/w that I use.
