Old Project files after X5 install

Post by Davidk »

I've been using VS11.5+ and crested a lot of project files and video clips using it. I recently installed VSX5 ultimate on the same PC. I kept the old 11.5+ installation because it was more trouble than it was worth to go over all the old work, and using 11.5 when I needed to address them was OK. So I thought. I know that with X5, project files are backwards compatible (but not the reverse), but I believe that any project files created with VS11.5 and un-opened by X5 should still be readable by 11.5. That doesn't seem to be the case. I've tried to open some old vsp files from 11.5 and the message I get repeatedly is unreadable format. This seems to suggest that vsp files - all vsp files - are now the regime of the X5 installation even if untouched by it.

Is there any explanation for this odd behaviour???

Hi David

When you upgrade to a later version of Video Studio the old project files (VSP's) can be opened in the newer versions

When you save the project using Save As, the save window allows you to save for an earlier version, (backward compatible) however this only reverts back two versions. From X5 you can revert to X4 and X3.

Choose File - Save As, selecting the "Save As Type" panel allows you to choose an earlier version.

Unfortunately VS 11 will not be available.

If you owned X3 then you can revert to VS 11.
--------------------------------
If you have a project that you really need to open in VS 11 then send the project file (VSP) to me and I will try to save it from X5 through X3 to VS11, if that makes sense.
I cannot guarantee that this will work but in theory should, provided you haven’t applied any edits not supported by VS11.

Hi Trevor,
I think what the OP is saying is that he has project files from VS11.5 that he has not opened in VS X5. He tried opening them in VS 11.5 and they will not open after installing VS X5. In other words, installing VS X5 may have done something to prevent the older version from opening VSP files.

I'm working on testing this. I had to re-install VS 11.5.

Doing as well as can be expected, thank you Trevor.

Davidk,
I've tried to replicate VS 11.5 not opening VSP files that are created in that version, however can not. Every project I have that was created in VS11.5 can still be opened in it. Couple of questions, are you trying to open the VSP file from within VS 11.5? If you're double-clicking on the VSP in a windows explorer window, then the latest version will be used to try to open it. If that's the case, launch VS 11.5, then select to open the project from the file menu.

Do you still have the CD or install files and serial number for VS 11.5? If so you might try reinstalling it.

Re: Old Project files after X5 install

This is perplexing on a number of levels.

As further background, I recently (mid-Mar) upgraded from WinXP3 on Fat32 to Win 7 on ntfs, and (as MS described) this was a whole replacement action - keep the original disks of programs required handy for a reinstall. Which is what happened - after the upgrade I reinstalled VS11.5+ including the patches that applied. And worked for week or so with various project files. Then a good deal on X5 came along and I took it. The install went well and I worked with it in a batch of holiday project files for several days before encountering the issue reported.

After I read the responses above I did a bit of further testing. Double clicked a known really old, untouched by X5 even to look at, VS11 project file from within explorer, and it opened VS11 and then the project file: OK. Reversed that: opened VS11 and then opened that project file - again, opened OK.

I closed both VS versions, and tried opening the project file I encountered the issue with: from explorer (double click the file name), and VS11 opened and then it reported the file format not supported error. Closing VS11, opened X5 and then opened the same project file, and it works.

Complications found: from within explorer, opening the properties of project files old (VS11 only) and recently worked on (with X5), are both reported as type of file "Ulead VideoStudio 11.0 Document (.VSP)", and open with "Ulead VideoStudio". Both of the files affected were originally created with VS11, but one of them has been extensively changed using X5. I would have expected that the changed file last saved with X5, would open with X5 when double clicked in explorer. Nope. Opened the older/original VS version and then reported the file format issue.

And I think that's what occurred in the event that led me to report this occurrence, which late one evening after a bunch of work was puzzling to say the least. But it leads at least one interesting after effect - like why does X5 not update the vsp details (eg open with) even as it changes the file format on a current or an old file?

Many thanks for the various inputs

Hi David

Just to confirm what you have found.......
Yes there is some issues with windows explorer showing the project files details.
If you view "windows explorer" in Detail View you will see a column marked "Type"
this indicates the file to be a Corel Video Studio Document or Video Studio Document depending on which versions you have installed.

It will probability indicate a version number I see Corel Video Studio 12.0 Document.

When we install a later version you would expect this detail to change however it seems to remain as the first installed, even though the project file was created by a later version. maybe X5.

and yes you would expect the latest version to be installed would take preference, it has always been like this, maybe we have just become used to it.

We always recommend opening Video Studio first, then opening the project from the File menu.
Indecently the last four projects are available to open from the bottom of the list after selecting file.
a quick launch..........

Can we assume that you are able to open your projects when using X5.
