I get the idea to save my processed RAW files in jp2 jpeg 2000 16 bit format(channel) so they need less space as RAW or tiff and can be later good modify without noticable quality loss. But i get the requester, that the format support only 24 bit ( 8 bit/channel)
jpeg 2000 is here since 10 years. Is it not possible that windows or other programs can read 16 bit /channel files, or whats the reason wy it is not possible in PSP X4 upd 1 to store such files ?
Does other programs too not support 16 bit /channel jpg ?
save of 16 bit /channel in jpg 2000 Format is not possible

Re: save of 16 bit /channel in jpg 2000 Format is not possib
I use the RAW which is in PSP in 16 bit/CHannel.How did qre you saving your "jp2 jpeg 2000"? When I tried saving a photo as "jp2 jpeg 2000" I was not given that message.
I test now another image and i do the steps.
load a jpg
increase the colordepth to 16 bit
choose save as
and select from the filetype listbox jp2 jpeg2000
In Option i have the settings with loss and compression 75
when press save, the message come that this format support 24 bit and 16 million colors
i test lossless now too, problem is same.I also enable on 1 test the Option only jpeg2000 codestream.Problem was same
I use german psp, i dont know how i can change that to give you precise requester text.
before i buy psp X4 i test the Demo, this was english, but now its german.
I more like all in english, because it is better for support.
EDIT: I have all warnings and automatik Action in prefs in default mode and so it show the warning

I just tried this with PSPX4, PSPX3, and Photoshop Elements 9.0. I get the same warning you do with X4 and X3. PSE doesn't even give Jpeg2000 as an option.
Can I ask why you'd want to use such an obscure format and not something more widely accepted like a Tiff file or the like?

Re: save of 16 bit /channel in jpg 2000 Format is not possib
I want save the RAW files in good image quality and less size, so i can delete the RAW. And i guess wy not use jpeg 2000 16 bit for this, because also when really later image process, the loss to RAW is very few and maybe not visible.
I also notice with my Monitor (good view angle Kontrast 3000:1) in some dark places color steps, when i save as jpg. when i load the file in, blur them, then they go away. But when i save the file as jpg even in 100% they come back.
seem blue level in dark places, jpg can only reach numbers 1 or 3 or 5. I know most monitor show this as black, but my iiyama x2472 HD show then color steps.
I think my monitor is ok(psp monitor calibration tell that too), and this is no problem in PSP, because other jpg saver have same Problem.

Please think twice before you discard your RAW files. A few years ago when I started shooting RAW, I had a smaller hard drive, and needing the space, discarded my RAW files after developing the images. Now, I kick myself every time I look at some of those older images, knowing there's little I can do to improve them. I wish I had saved them on a CD or external drive.photopainter wrote:I want save the RAW files in good image quality and less size, so i can delete the RAW.
In recent years, we have access to much better software technology for developing RAW. Corel's AfterShot Pro promises to be a great non-destructive method of getting the best images possible from those RAW files. Even PSP with tools like the NIK plugins can give you better results than just a few years back.
I know of no other format that will save all the image information you get in your RAW files. If you need the space, burn them to a CD. Someday you'll be glad you did.

I agree 100% with Bob. In addition to what he said, using Jpeg2000 for intermediate files makes little sense. If you're trying to use it as a final file it's rather obscure and what may look good on your monitor may not look good on another monitor. As Bob points out, no other format that you can save too will be as small of a file as your original RAW file that still save all of the information. A Tiff can be close to 10x bigger for example. Give Aftershot Pro a try. It's designed for raw files, PSP isn't.
When processed properly, a raw file should be able to produce a jpeg of good quality for final use (prints, online viewing, etc...)
