Easyest way to fit 5.8 GB on a DVD

Post by happydog500 »

Well after 4 months of trial and error, I got a good quality Movie File (I think).

I'm U.S. so it's NTSC. I recorded a VHS using AVI Setting. In UVS 7, I switched, converted or whatever you call it, to MPEG2. The 1 hour and 44 minute video was 28.4GB (AVI) to 5.8 GB in MPEG2.

With DVD Shrink I can compress larger DVD's to fit on a DVD-R, but it won't see Video Files made in UMS.

Is there a way to get larger then DVD size files on a single layer disc like DVD Shrink but will work with files made with UMS?

I don't want to do another 6 hours and use less fps. I would like to do it like DVD Shrink does.

I found a program (free) called rejig that does it, but mine come out with no sound. Seems complacated to do it with sound.

The tip to capture in AVI was a real good one. The quality looks very much better then captureing in MPEG. Even After I whatever and made it an MPEG2 (although I still need to see it after I get it on a disc to know for sure).

The bad thing about using another program to do this is I will lose my chapters set in UMS. Why doens't UMS have something like this that uses compression to fit?

Anybody know what I sould do? Any suggestions? Thank you very much,
Chris.

Hi happydog

The size of a video file is directly related to the bit rate of the video in Kb/s.

The type of audio used also has size, and can effect the amount of space left for the video.

Lpcm audio is the US standard, being large in file size compared to digital dolby for instance.

To reduce the file size of your movie you have to REDUCE the Bit Rate of the video.

I do not use DVd Shrink, but the process must reduce the bit rate in order to reduce the file size.

You can use a bit rate calculator which will establish the rate required for a given Mpeg.

Try these links

http://dvd-hq.info/Calculator.html

http://www.videohelp.com/calc.htm

As a guide

Up to 60 minutes of video use 8000kb/s

Up to 90 minutes of video use 6000 kb/s

Up to 120 minutes of video use 4000kb/s

Whatever method you choose to reduce the file you will have to re-do the menu’s during the burner stage.

Next time.
After edition in DV-Avi, use the bit-rate calculator then render to Mpeg 2 using the correct rate.

Next time.
After edition in Dv-Avi, use the bit-rate calculator then render to Mpeg 2 using the correct rate.

Hope this Helps

When you reduce the bitrate the qualty goes down. When you keep the bitrate up and use compression it makes the video better quality.

"...it makes the video better quality."

Better than at some settings, but you'll never get better quality than your original VHS. That's your limiting factor.

In the disk creation screen where you burn the dvd UNCHECK "Burn Disk"
Click on the drop_down arrow to highlight the additional choices and
select "Create Dvd folder".

That will create a dvd structure on the harddisk (drive & directory that you assgn).
VS will create a VIDEO_TS folder and all the files will be in that folder.
It's a exact image of the dvd files except written to the harddisk.

Then using Dvd Shrink or any program that recalculates the dvd (Nero) point
to program to that folder you created on the harddisk.
Nero 6 has this feature in it's video programs.
Chapter points are also saved and not lost using Nero.

Hope this helps,

"Hope this helps"
This is the answer I've been looking for for 2 months!!! I did it and it works. Very good video. Thank you very much!!!!

I do have one problem that if I can solve, I'd have a good system to put my VHS to DVD.

Here is the problem. I need DVD Shrink to fit the video file on the DVD. I can't get Shrink to put the chapters and menus on. I have the file (one long file) and it has the "menus" before I burn, but the chapters (menu) isn't on the disc when I get done.

Nero will keep them, I just put each seprate vob in. The problem is nero doens't shrink. It says it can't shrink the file.

I tried to put the seprate vobs in shrink but it doesn't recignize them. It only has the one file when I go get it.

I can get a good quality video on a disc, so far I just can't get the chapters I made in MS. Any ideas? Thank you very much,
Chris.

Hi Happydog500

I have just made a TS folder using VS from 11 mpeg 2 clips.
Approx size 5.32 Gb
This created 11 menu’s, I didn’t make any chapters.

I then used DVD Shrink to burn a disc.
DVD Shrink re-coded the clips from 4.30Mbps to 3.05Mbps in order to fit.
Reduced size 4.35Gb

All Menu’s copied to the disc ok

I have not used DVD Shrink that much and have always let VS re-code my clips, but the process went so smooth that I will be using the program in the future.
This is what I did.

Selected Full Disc tab
Selected Open Files, browsed for my TS folder.
Took a while to load
Selected Backup
Selected my burner from the backup target.

Hope this Helps

Didn't work for me.
Here is what's the difference from nero (works) and Shrink (doesn't).

In nero when I go the the "Video_TS folder," I can open it up and there will be seprate files. I highlighted all, then added them.
In Shrink I can't get to the files inside "Video_TS." It just puts the whole "Video_TS" in Shrink.

How does yours work when you go to the folder?

Just re-read you last post and saw you didn't create chapters. I'm doing a live concert and wat chapters at each song.

Hi
I have now re-rendered my video project into one file (5.3 Gb)

I created a TS Folder using VS with one menu and 10 chapters.

I then used DVD Shrink to burn a Dvd.

Using Dvd Shrink I can select the TS folder but NOT see the content
Dvd Shrink starts by recoding the contents of the TS folder to fit a Dvd.

Then continues to burn the disc.

I have played the disc on my pc using Power Dvd, and on my tv all plays ok and can flip through the chapters.

I've been using Nero version 6 (latest updates) RECODE.
Recode is the name of the program.

I've never loaded the VOB files individually. I've always selected the
VIDEO_TS folder and the program(s) read the complete dvd structure.
It's important for the program to load the IFO files and all the menu
files.

Nero Recode can be confusing to use but all the programs that
shrink a dvd all have options.
I'm sure there's options in Shrink to do what you want to do.
(maybe changing the mode etc.)

I do remember the latest version of Nero Recode with all the updates
asks you in the launching menu whether to re-encode only the main
movie or the complete Dvd.

Some additional info:
You can also BURN that dvd structrue (VIDEO_TS) folder using Nero.
When starting Nero select Dvd-Video. Then drag the contents of the
VIDEO_TS folder on the harddisk into the VIDEO_TS folder in the
compilation window.

Glad to hear your making progress with the project(s).

i can't burn in Nero. It's to big. I'll need to read the last two post over and over until I get what your saying. I don't understand.

Trevor, what do you think as to why your chapters show up and mine don't? Have you switched any settings?

The additional info was to explain that you can burn a dvd folder
using nero. You don't have to use Ulead to burn the dvd.
The file sizes have to be correct of course.

Hi happydog

I change no settings at all.
This is what I did.

I captured 9 clips from VHS . A total of 2.5 hrs of footage at 4750 Kbps. Assuming it would fit to disc.
I was about to re-render using VS when I read your posting, and decided to give Dvd Shrink a go.

First attempt.
I made a TS folder using the 9 clips, this made 9 main menus, no chapters.

Second attempt
I rendered the 9 clips into one file, (5.3 Gb) using the single file I made a TS folder, one main menu and 8 chapters.

The TS folders were used in Dvd Shrink to burn a Dvd.
----------------------------------------------------------------

Dvd Shrink.(version 3.2.01.5)

1 / Selected Full Disc
2 / Open Files and selected my TS folder
3 / Dvd Shrink Analysed the folder and inserted them into the left panel (DVD Structure)
4 / I then selected Back-up
5 / I selected the Backup Target as my burner ( H: TDK DVDRW880N)
6 / Selected a folder for temporary files.
7 / Placed a DVD-RW in the burner
8 / Dvd Shrink started encoding, and burned disc.

I have this to re do this, as I want sound over the menu page.
If there are any changes or I find a different approach I will lit you know.

Menu’s and Chapters were copied to disc in both cases.

Hope this Helps

happydog500, im just wondering, when using dvd shrink are you using re-author mode as this will strip out the menus rather than doing a straight backup which keeps the menus....
