I purchased (USB-Live 2) to convert VHS tapes to DVD. I initially purchased "Ulead VideoStudio 11" to capture and edit video, but the software wouldn't work. I received the following messages: "cannot start the capture graph" or "cannot capture: copy protected material". I was unable to receive a solution from the Hauppauge tech people or the corel tech people, therefore I purchased the Pinnacle studio 12 software and their Dazzle DVC 100 capture device.
Using the "USB-Live 2" device and Pinnacle Studio 12 as my capture software and Ulead VideoStudio 11 to edit and burn, I successfully converted about 100 VHS tapes to DVD disks. Then the Audio would not sync. What happens is that for about 5 minutes the audio will be out of sync, then something happens and the audio will re-sync and stay in sync until the end of the project. But, with the next tape I try to capture the same problem occurs.
When in capture mode I can start capture and let it record for about 5 minutes, then, start the tape in the VCR and the audio will be in sync.
I wiped the Hard drive and reloaded Windows XP and all of my programs. I also replaced the sound card, but I still have the same problem. I think the problem is with the Hauppauge USB-Live 2 capture device. If I use the Dazzle DV100 there is no sync problem, just a lot of dropped frames.
Also, now when I am capturing the video I have no audio but when I edited the project the audio will be on. When I installed the New Sound Card I disabled the onboard HD Audio and it is still disabled.
The following are my computer specs.
Asus P5NSLI motherboard
Intel Core 2 DUO 2.66GHz
3 GB DDR2 800 MHz Ram
Nvidia GeForce GT220
Asus Xonar DG 5.1 Sound Card
Hard Drive: 2- 320 Gb drives
Monitor: eMachines E2024
WinXP SP3

Re: audio/video out of sync
I'm not sure what help can be given here.
Hauppage and pinnacle products are not Corel products, you may not find anyone here who uses them. Best ask on Hauppage adn Pinnacle forums.
As you've found that the dazzle works, why not just use that?

Re: audio/video out of sync
I know the USB-Live 2 comes with its own Hauppage software (WinTV) and I know other users here have used Hauppage software successfully for capture. I personally have used Win TV successfully in the past, though I no longer have that capture device.
In fact we usually recommend you use the software which comes with any capture device for capturing since it is tweaked to work specifically with the device.
At one time the USB-Live 2 used to come with a version of (Ulead) Movie Factory, and people thought that could be used for capture, but it was only for editing/authoring...

Re: audio/video out of sync
I have tried the Hauppauge and Pinnacle forums, but their solutions caused other problems that could not be resolved. My question is if I do what you recommend and use the software that comes with the capture device, why does Corel sell software that is used for video capture but does not sell capture devices?
Thanks. Dannie

Re: audio/video out of sync
Since I'm not a Corel employee, I can't really answer that question. However, like a number of other software companies selling such packages, Corel provides a general capture module which may not work with all capture devices. Producing their own capture device is not an obligatory corollary. A number of other software manufacturers (such as Cyberlink, Adobe, Avid to name a few) also have packages which capture but don't have their own capture devices. I don't know whether those other packages can capture from all hardware capture devices, though I doubt it.
The problem is mostly due to the fact that hardware manufacturers don't share the details of the processes used by their devices, for proprietary/profit reasons. So the software makers are in that sense working in the dark. They can only produce generalised software which may or may not work with specific devices. But if the hardware makers produce their own software to go with their devices, you know at least that the software has been fully tweaked to go with the hardware. Hence our recommendation always to use the software which came with a capture device.
