How can I crop an image into a heart shape with x3?

Post by maxman41 »

Hi, I've got some pictures and Corel Paintshop photo pro x3. It's a nice program but I cant figure out how to crop photos into shapes without using the "lasso". My hand isn't so great with fine shapes so I was hoping someone knows of a way to cut a shape by using one of the presets? I've found alot of adobe photoshop tutorials but they dont really help because corel is a bit different. PLease Help?

I can think of a few ways:

1) Vector preset shape tool. Select a heart shape from the preset shapes list and drag out a heart. Then with the heart selected go to the "Selections" menu and select "Selection from vector object." This will create a selection in the form of the heart on the image. Just select the image layer again and crop it.

2) Also involves vectors. You may not like the heart given in the preset shapes. So you could always make your own using the pen tool which allows you to create your own vectors. You can then do the exact same thing.

The advantage of #2 is that if you get a heart that you think is perfect you can trace it, then export the resulting vector as a preset shape. Once it's a preset shape you can use option #1 with the new heart vector.

3) Draw a heart shape on another layer. Then select the area around the heart using the Magic Wand Tool and use that selection to crop the image with. For example if you go to the "Image" menu and select "Picture Frame" there is a frame in the shape of a heart. Make sure it frames its own layer and not the whole image. Then by selecting the outside with the magic wand tool (using add mode instead of replace mode) I can crop the rest of the image. But the "picture Frame" dialog is just one of many ways to get an image of a heart into your image. However you choose to do it, just make sure it's on its own layer.
