On my XP PC I use IrfanView for fast browsing and viewing. One of its features allows me to open any of 3 external editors while viewing an image in IrfanView. My preferred choice is this entry:
C:\Program Files\Jasc Software Inc\Paint Shop Pro 8\Paint Shop Pro.exe
That used to work OK, opening the image in PSP8, but now it either gives me that jarring 'big error' sound (and nothing else), or displays a message about an 'Unhandled exception, code 101'.
Anyone with any suggestions about what might be causing this please?

Re: Unhandled exception
Hi Terry,
I have XP Home fully updated and also use Irfanview (v 3.32) - it is fantastic for organising renaming , copyrighting , batch resizing images. I had never used it to go directly to one of the PSP s til I read your post.
So opened an image from the desktop just now and set the preferences in Irfanview and successfully loaded images into PSP8, PSP X 2 and PSP X 4 without any troubles, The image was small only 300 x 195 pixels and worked twice with no problems. My path was "... Jasc Software Inc\Paint Shop Pro 8\Paint Shop Pro.exe"
So not sure what your problem is, may be something else on your computer - last program installed ? or something else. Have you tried it on some other computer ?

Re: Unhandled exception
Thanks, appreciate your checking it out. Does indeed look like it's something unique to my setup.
I'm now certain IrfanView is not involved. I've just tried running from the XP Run box (Start > Run or [Win + R]). If PSP8 is initially not running and I enter something like this:
"C:\Program Files\Jasc Software Inc\Paint Shop Pro 8\Paint Shop Pro.exe" "C:\Docs\My Pictures\PHOTOS\Sorrento 2008\Test\20080413-105256.jpg"
then PSP8 duly opens and displays the file.
But if I then leave PSP8 open (with or without that file displayed) and repeat the run, with a new file, then I get the error sound and nothing else happens.
Same thing happens if no file is specified in the Run box, just the PSP8 executable.
It's as if PSP8 objects to being asked to run when it's already running.
I haven't got another PC at hand to try, but I'll do some PC spring cleaning and see if that helps.

Re: Unhandled exception
Hi Terry ,
Did not realise you had posted again. One of the problems with this BB board is that it does not bump recently answered posts to the top of the queue as do some others so had to go through to page 4 to relocate.
Just repeated your steps and no problems. Could not repeat your error messages. Did not realise that PSP8 could have 2 iterations open at the same time, thought there might be a conflict, but seems OK.
Also did not realise that program and image could be opened in Run box that way either and two iterations of the program. All worked well with no problems.
XP Home fully upto date, Irfanview 4.30 and PSP 8 version 8.00 Build (8000004) .
That seems to be a convoluted way of opening images in PSP.
I use Irfanview a lot to check with thumbnails if an image or group of images are in a particular folder, Then I open that folder in windows (thumbnail view) and drag and drop images to a working folder. This working folder is left open on the desktop and images are dragged and dropped from here into an open PSP8 workspace and when processed I hit the Save button (rather than Save as as I know they are copies and I can overwrite them.)
I use Irfanview for producing contact sheets and for printing images and contact sheets as it is so easy to use.
I would really like Irfanview to allow thumbnails to be dragged and dropped into another working folder or an open PSP8 workspace (Yeah I know you can use 'Open in External Editor' but that does not handle multiple selected files which would be a good option as well. Perhaps in a newer version of Irfanview)
