Thank you for the prompt reply. VS X5 is my version. I have Smart Proxy enabled already. Files were recorded using my Lumix FZ1000. I burn the final project onto both Bluray (for me) & standard DVDs (for others on the trip to Brazil's Pantanal). Obviously I have the options panel open frequently to make various adjustments. I have no idea whether this is closed when I replay or not. I usually play it full screen to assess the overall result. I've just played a bad bit not full screen with the Options window closed & it froze at the usual spot. I opened the Options window, but as soon I selected Play Project, it closed anyway. I've just played the bad clip on it's own & it played fine with the Options window opened & closed. It's only when I play the Project that the jerkiness occurs. At best it just plays jumpily. At worst it freezes for several seconds before jumping to a later point.

Hi John

What was the Pantanal trip like? its one place on our list to do.

You seem to indicate having a problem with one particular video clip.

Are you able to upload to a sharing site, maybe One Drive so we can test the video.

What are your project properties? do you use F6 Show messages….. to set the properties to match the video file, that’s if VS5 can do that with your files.

Smart Proxy, you have checked that proxy files have been created for the video clips, view Smart Proxy file Manager, just to make sure, in addition an icon is placed on the clip indicating proxies are being used?

VS X5 is a little old and improvements have been made in editing HD video with the recent version X9.??

The Pantanal is fantastic, Trevor. We've been twice, though we had to do the second trip before we saw any jaguars! Highly recommended. Our tour leader this trip was Miguel Castelino, one of the founders and co-owner of Trogon Tours. Check him out: he was very good.

No, alas the problem is with lots of the video clips. Smart Proxy is enabled, but when I look in Smart Proxy File Manager the list is empty!

A quick look at the preferences list (pic attached) has thrown me: where did .avi come from? Sorry, I get very confused by all these formats & settings. I've included a screen shot of part of the Pref menu that seems to apply. Hope this helps you sort me out. Thank you.

Hi John

The Proxy Settings are ok.
If your video files have a frame size over 720 x 576 then proxy files will be created.

Can you right click one of your video files on the timeline and choose properties.
What are they?
Please make an image of that window, Alt+ PrtSc will copy the panel to the clipboard, paste to an image editor to save a Jpeg, attach to your post.

My videos are over those sizes, so why aren't they on the list already? I've attached 2 Properties from 2 different clips, one converted to mp4, & one original m2t formats. Interestingly both of these clips are playing happily at the moment!

Regards.

Hi John

I have had a little more time to view your post.
The project properties are not correct, I would not expect those settings.
I would have expected Mpeg2 as the output settings for burning a DVD as below.

PAL (25 fps)
MPEG files
24 bits, 720 x 576, 25 fps
Frame-based
(DVD-PAL), 16:9
Video data rate: 8000 kbps
Audio data rate: 256 kbps
Dolby Digital Audio, 48 KHz, 2/0(L,R)

Just seen your latest reply.

Your project properties are using 50 fps when the video uses 25.
Please change the Project Properties as above

You should not have to convert M2t to mp4, when you burn a disc they will be converted a second time, impacting on quality.

Smart Proxy

Right click one of your M2t files, choose to Create Smart Proxy
Now go to Settings – Smart proxy Manager-- Queue Manager to view the progress.

When complete an icon should show on the clip.
Now Settings Smart proxy manager - File Manager to view the rendered file, does it show there?

Thank you Trevor.

I've changed the settings to 25fps, but left the picture as 1024x576 so I can do an HD copy for me.

I did a right click & managed to get a video clip on to the Smart proxy File Manager list. Does that mean I need to right click on all the video clips, & will that make the clip play smoother?

We're off the the pictures tonight, so I have to shut down now & try again in the morning. Thanks.

Hi John

Yes you have to select all clips to choose create Proxy files.
But for new files added to a project they will be created automatically.

Use Shift + Click to select multiple clips, select first clip then Shift + Click last to select all.

It does take a while to render, if you close VS5 then the process will stop.

Try with a few clips, yes it should improve project playback.
If Clip playback is slow then SP wont help?

Not sure I understand the “HD copy for me “ unless you are referring to taking a “Snapshot”

With the project properties set to Mpeg 2 -- 720 x 576 then taking a snapshot in Clip mode will create an image using the video frames size. 1440 x 1080
Taking a “snapshot” in Project mode will use 1024 x 576, Pal 16:9 equivalent image size.

Enjoy your evening.....

Thank you. I'm on roll now. I had a moments panic when the list under Smart Proxy Files vanished after a crash. Then I looked in the Corel directory & found the full Smart Proxy list, so I guess they are all saved so far. All the clips I've tried (now converted back to .m2t) ran perfectly.

Regarding “HD copy for me “, basically I am Bluray equipped. I want to end up with the best quality Bluray disc for personal use. However, I also need to produce 3 or 4 copies as ordinary Standard Def DVDs for others in the party, including Miguel who has requested one. To get the Bluray, I want the settings as high res as possible. My .m2t clips seem to be 1440 x 1080, so I'd like the finished disc to be that. I've just reset the Project Properties to 1440 x 1080 25fps. I hope that is the right thing to do, or will that cause problems elsewhere? My HD TV has a higher res than that - 1920 x 1080. Ah! I've just looked at my reset project & the video clip where I was looking has shrunk to a smaller size in the middle off the frame!! I think I'll put it back... Phew! it looks ok again now, back to 1024 x 576. Not the definition I want though...

If you let me know where, I can send you a link to some Brazil Pantanal pics on my Dropbox.

Regards
John.

Hi

I don’t know what is happening with your clip size when using 1440 x 1080 project properties, Did you set the aspect to 16:9? Not 4:3

Using X5 you are limited to AVI or Mpeg project properties.

I would use Mpeg as the settings I posted earlier.

It could be of course normal, we cannot identify the preview frame as the unused area is the same colour, Black< change F6 Preferences – background to another colour will id the frame area.
Adding your video should fill that coloured area.
Change back to black when rendering the project……

Quality

After completing the editing convert the project to Bluray file.
Share Create Video File – Bluray 1440 x 1080, or create your own template using your video files properties. (just a lower data rate) Play the file to test quality, then burn that file to BD.
Start a new project, share Create Disc Bluray – add Video, the new HD file.

For DVD convert the Bluray file to Mpeg2 for SD DVD
Again play to check quality
Use that DVD compliant file to burn a disc, choose to burn an ISO
Play the iso using VLC Media Player
Then burn the ISO to disc, (tools Burn from Disc Image) as many copies as you like.

Oh

Before rendering set F6 Preferences – Edit tab – Resampling Quality to Best

Thank you again, Trevor. I'll save all your advice & follow it as I produce the discs.

"I don’t know what is happening with your clip size when using 1440 x 1080 project properties, Did you set the aspect to 16:9? Not 4:3" - yes, I have it set to 16:9 to suit the TV. When I (briefly) set the Project Properties to 1440 x 1080 , I got a smaller video surrounded by a large black border.

I've found some previous instructions I got from the User Web Board:

X5 use Share Create video file Bluray 1920 x 1080P

MPEG Transport-Stream Files
24 bits, 1920 x 1080, 25 fps
Frame-based
(HDMV-PAL), 16:9
H.264 Video
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 20000 kbps)
Audio data rate: 384 kbps
Dolby Digital Audio, 48 KHz, 2/0(L,R)

There was also a note: Deselecting Smart Render before creating a disc seemed to fix a twitch when using X5.

Hopefully that's right & everything should be lovely!

Regards,
John.

I've found one other thing. I spent an hour or so going through the 1 hour project setting all the bits of video to Smart Proxy. I seemed to have missed a few yesterday. There are maybe 20 or 30 clips of about 4 to 40 secs each. Later, I went to play an earlier video clip section only to find the Smart Proxy icon had disappeared from most of the clips! The project had crashed & been reloaded in the mean time, but it had been saved just before the crash. I went back & reset the Smart Proxy on the first 2 clips I wanted to view. Now the icon seems to have returned to some of the rest on it's own. Others, which I know I set this morning, are still without the icon.

Is this just an icon display thing, or am I going to have to go through the project each time I reload it to reset the Smart Proxy clips?

Thank you.
John.
