Video Output FPS

Post by DWaldie »

I've been playing with a free trial of X5 and I'm tempted to buy the full version but I am struggling to get good quality output.

I have a number of clips at 1080p (30fps) and 720p (60fps). These look excellent when played raw from the videocamera files (MP4s), but no matter what output I select from Videostudio they look as if there is a stutter as if played at a lower fps. This effectively renders Videostudio a non-starter as my videos will look worse edited than unedited. Am I missing something, or is this a limitation of the software.

I have a hex core AMD 1050T with 16GB of memory and a GTX560Ti so there should not be a performance problem.

I'm really getting on with the software, so I'm hoping I'm missing something in the settings.

Thanks,
woxof

Did you use Smart Proxy to render the files down to a managable size? It takes awhile to render but it seems to make the program work right. I have a Contour and I use smart proxy for the 1080p. But now i shoot in 720p 30fps on a lower quality. For helmet cam on dirt bikes it still seems to be pretty good quality. HP Pavilion Elite HPE AMD 6 core and 6GB (8?) mem.

Hi Woxof. I tried that and it made no difference. I think the problem is that my projects default to 25fps. If I add a clip at 60fps and play the clip alone, it works fine, but if I play it as a project then the fps drops.

I assume there is a setting somewhere to adjust. Any clues anoyone?

On the Settings menu, select the "Enable 60p/50p editing" option if your video is 60 or 50 fps progessive. That might make a difference. I have some 60p video that I Shared to DV.avi. When the 60p/50p option is selected, the DV-AVI is easier to watch than when the option is not selected.

You can also try creating your own movie template, so that you can output the video to a much higher fps and quality. On videostudio x5, you can just go to http://pnoy.me/1F for information about Movie Template

Thanks for that. I've managed to create a template (several actually). How do I now open these so that my project matches the template?

When you go to Share > Create Video File, your new templates should appear at the bottom of the drop-down menu...

HELP!

I reinstalled VZX4 a few months ago and have come to try and create a 60fps video file and I'm back to where I started. I recall changing a setting for 60/50p editing and creating some templates. The option to select 60/50p editing has gone.

What have I done?

Just a bump to try and get some help.

I've had a good look over VSX4 tonight and I still can;t find the 50/60p editing option. Has it been removed in one of the automatic upgrades?

This is what I just wrote for another user who was after 50p output. It also applies to your problem, I think. And though I wrote it for X5, it should also work with X4...
If you choose Custom as the output, you then select "MPEG Transport Stream Files (*.m2t)" as the output format. Then under Options in that dialogue box, you go to the Compression tab and select the video format as H.264 Video and tick the AVCHD box below that. Back on the General tab, you will then find that you can set the frame rate at up to 50 frames per second -- at least I can on my set-up.

The only downside to this is that VS will only use a bitrate maximum of 18 Mbps where the current international standard has raised that to 28 Mbps.

You could also make a Custom template using Make Movie Template Manager with the above properties. But in that same Manager, if you already have a clip with exactly the properties you are after on your computer somewhere and with a bitrate higher than 18 Mbps, click on the Add button in the Manager's dialogue box. In the new box which appears, click the "..." button beside the empty File Path window and navigate to where that file is stored. Its path should then appear. Give the new template a name. Press OK to close that box, then Close to shut the first dialogue box. That new template should now appear at the bottom when you next select Share > Create Video File.

After much fiddling and a reinstall, the penny has dropped. The 50/60p editing is a feature in VSX5 but not VSX4 (which I now use). All your methods work, with the limitations you mention and one additional: If I try to use the option to base the project on the first file it renders beautifully at 60p but the sound is completely distorted. A real pity as this gets the best quality video output for me.

Is there a way of outputting AVI at high resolution (1080p)? I can only get lower resolutions and I would like to try using my TV to play the AVI directly from USB.
