SmartProxy not always working (X5)

Post by kinglerch »

I have used SmartProxy for most of my projects, and had no issues with X4, and in fact used X5 a few times with SmartProxy too. But I tried a recent video of about 60 minutes and SmartProxy begins, I can see the ~Proxy_ file in the directory, but then it just gives up and the Proxy file is gone.

Is there any other way I can do this? There's nothing apparently wrong with my video file and in fact use it fine (though slow) for editing without the Proxy file. I can even create my own Proxy file using another program, but don't know how to let X5 know it is there and to use it.

What are my options to get SmartProxy to work? Why would it simply stop processing and not create the Proxy file? It is too far into my project to break the video up into smaller chunks, though that would only be a guess because I don't know why SmartProxy should stop processing :?

Hi

Can you fill in your profile to include your PC spec, access the profile tab from the User Control Panel, link above.

Then tell us if your filing system is using Fat32 or NTFS, Fat32 has a 4gb file limit.
Its most likely that you are using NTFS but just need to confirm

When you view Settings Smart Proxy Queue manager you can view files being created, viewing the Smart Proxy Manager shows the created files.
They will have names similar to the originals.

Some users have in the past found that these are removed/deleted when re-starting the program.
What do you see?

I have an X6 Phenom with 8GB RAM, not in front of the program right now. It is NTFS because my files are huge. But I have used SmartProxy on an hour of HD material before with no problems. In fact, the first Smart Proxy issue I have come across is with X5. Well, I also had the problem where Proxy files need to be recreated after the program restarts, but they would at least create.

Now I view the SmartProxy queue manager and I see the conversion start, I even see the ~Proxy_ file in the folder where all the Proxy files are. But the file is always 0 length and then disappears after a few minutes.

I think I will have to create my own proxy, rename the files, and use X5's relinker in order to have proxy files. I just don't know why X5 is having trouble making Proxy files on it's own, when no other version (back to 11) had any such problem.

to my understanding, it may take sometime before VS X5 complete the creation of proxy files.

Hi Kinglerch

A couple of questions

1 / Have ever changed the location of the Smart Proxy folder, allocating a new folder on the hard drive.?
2 / As a test using a small HD file create a Smart Proxy file, view the Smart Proxy File Manager before and after creating the file. A file should exist having a similar name as original.
Do not close X5 till the Queue Manager is empty
A double icon will show on the clip when proxy files have been created

Re boot video studio, then view the Smart proxy file manager again, is the file still there.?

Some users had problems where the proxy files disappeared after re-booting the program. This should not happen.

Adding them manually should be OK. After finishing, delete the proxy files using proxy files manager.

I have tried using the SmartProxy with many longer videos in X5 and it simply gives up after a minute or so. The Proxy file begins generating (I can see it in Windows Explorer) and it is in the SmartProxy queue, but after a minute, the proxy file is gone and it is out of the queue. I have tried these same videos in X4 and never had a problem, so this "giving up after a while" is new to X5.

Although I can still use the proxy files that were generated by X4. So my choices are to have X4 generate the proxy files for me, or for me to generate them myself and use SmartLink between the two. Thankfully, SmartLink isn't *so* smart that it prevents me from linking videos that have changed so much. So this is fine for me, but there is definitely something wrong with SmartProxy introduced in X5.

NOTE: I recently tried a video 1920x1080, but just under a minute in length, and same result. So it is not only long videos. FYI.

I have the same situation. I have tried to add my current project files to smart proxy several times. it added/converted the first few and then gave up. i deleted all unecessary files from the proxy manager, and am re-submitting the remaining unconverted project files. it was working fine until recently. I don't understand why it should be such a hassle, and if it's because the proxy manager was too full, there should be some sort of message to let you know that you need to do a bit of housekeeping.

Hi Guys

As a test
I have just added Mov video files 1920 x 1080 to the timeline the Smart Proxy file process started automatically. 157 clips in all, relatively short clips with a total duration of 55 minutes.

Viewing the Smart Proxy Queue Manager I see all clips requiring rendering to SP files, with the progress bar showing the current file.
Viewing the Smart Proxy File Manager I see the folder being populated with new Proxy Files having similar names to the originals.

Once proxy files have been created a small icon can be seen on the clip within the timeline. Lower right of the volume icon.
This is gonna take a long time, closing video studio will terminate the Smart Proxy process.
However you can right click your clips Shift + Clip will select multiple clips, then choose Create Smart Proxy files.

For the time being the process is progressing….slowly

As far as I know Video Studio has no limit to the amount or proxy files created.

I will update should it fail or finish
