Folks,
My X4 crashes ("Corel Paint Shop Pro X4 has stopped working" message) during the program start-up ("Initialing Palettes" of the splash screen). I have tried uninstalling and re-installing without success. I have tried installing X4 Service pack 1 without success. I updated my NVIDIA driver to the latest version, without success.
I am running Windows 7, x64. Addition system details are below.
Any suggestions?

You can try resetting the software. You can do that by pressing and holding down the SHIFT key then double-click on the PSP icon then when you received the message "DO YOU WAN TO RESTORE PAINTSHOP Pro TO ITS DEFAULT STATE?" just click OK.

Thanks for the suggestion, but it had no impact on the problem. PSP still crashes on program initialization. Does PSP create a log file for debugging purposes?Abiel Corel NA wrote:You can try resetting the software. PSP is not yet Large Address Aware http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/showt ... p?t=112556 (the first entry is likely the only part of that thread that you need to read) which is funny since X3 and X4 are both touted as being able to utilize faster more powerful computers. By not utilizing more than 2gb of RAM max a crash can happen. If using that program (Large Address Aware linked too in that thread) doesn't work or isn't something you want to try because I'm just some guy on the internet you could also try to uninstall PSP, then create a new account on your PC and reinstall PSP on the new account. If it works you should be able to use PSP from any account on your computer as well as delete the new account.

That is very interesting, and a little concerning that Corel is releasing lobotomized Windows 7 software. x64 Windows 7 is pretty main stream and hence so are system with memory >> 4 GB.df wrote:PSP is not yet Large Address Aware http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/showt ... p?t=112556 (the first entry is likely the only part of that thread that you need to read) which is funny since X3 and X4 are both touted as being able to utilize faster more powerful computers. Are other PSP X4 users that are running large memory Windows 7 systems having to do this type of hack? (Large Address Aware flag flipping).
I also do not follow the logic of installing PSP on another account. Care to elaborate on this further? (why would that make a difference)
I have also opened a trouble ticket with Corel on this issue.

Re: X4 Crash on Program Initialization (Win7 x64)
The Large Address Aware thing is something brought up by someone else on this forum. It only works for x64 computers and should only be used with computers with at least 6gb of RAM, otherwise it will likely cause a crash. You may find that there are lots of programs that aren't LAA. I use Vuescan all the time and when I have to switch to 32 bit mode I need to turn LAA on. Many game makers also don't turn it on either, and their stuff is pretty resource intensive.
No, most of us don't have to jump through hoops, I was just offering a solution.
As for the whole new account thing from what I can conclude (I've never read exactly why it works, just that many have had success) is that the new account is fresh. It likely doesn't have much registry corruption for example (uninstall a program and it leaves bits behind) and it doesn't have a lot of background programs loading that might get in the way. Maybe there's a more official answer, but I'm pretty sure it's because it's a fresh account.

Re: X4 Crash on Program Initialization (Win7 x64)
Thanks Dan.
I will update this thread if I make any progress.
BTW, I have another license of PSP X4 running without problem on another Windows 7 x64 machine, but with only 8 GB of memory. This is also the first 32-bit application I have encountered problems running under Windows 7 x64 (assuming this is indeed a x64/memory issue). perhaps I have been lucky.
Best regards,
Rob
