New Cameras? Fuji X100, Canon EOS-1d X

Post by MTF »

Can anyone please inform me if the Fuji X100 (Which I currently own) and the Canon Eos-1D X (Which I have on order) are included in the upcoming release.

My current 1D is fine under ASP but once the X arrives I need to have a working alternative to the Canon Software.

Have any X100 customers tried the new Beta of ASP???

Thanks

Mike

what makes you think a new release of ASP is imminent - the first version has only just been released and knowing Corel it will be a while yet before we get a new release - I also doubt if there is any beta testing at the moment so close to the release.

in any case *IF* there is a beta programme the beta testers are sworn to secrecy and would be infringing their non disclosure agreement if they mentioned it here. so the bottom line - you just have to wait and see.

Thanks for your reply, here's how I see it:
"what makes you think a new release of ASP is imminent"
I has to be imminent that's how the cyle runs ...... once a program/update is released what else is there to do other that to start work on the next release!

I fully expect Canon to be working on the next update/version of the EOD-1D X immediately after it's release.

If what your stating is simply that Corel doesn't keep their products fresh and updated with the latest advances in Photo technology ...... My comment would be, why would we as users settle for anything less.

I am updating my equipment regularly at great expense, that is the nature of the business ........ I expect no less from the suppliers of my hardware and software.
"knowing Corel it will be a while yet before we get a new release"
That's a sad statement ...... I hope you are wrong, or I've made a poor investment.

I don't expect updates for free ... but I sure expect Corel to release them in a timely fashion to stay in step with the industry it serves.
"*IF* there is a beta programme the beta testers are sworn to secrecy and would be infringing their non disclosure agreement if they mentioned it here"
We wouldn't want that now ........ I get the sneaking hunch you know Corel a lot better than I do, I thought the Corel purchase of Bibble would allow the software to advance at a pace alongside the rest of the industry. What it appears you are saying is that I should keep my fingers crossed and hope for the best that one day they may update it.

If Canon operated like this I would switch manufacturers in a heartbeat. I can't run a business on hope, my clients need results which hopefully I give them in a timely consistent manner.

What Corel needs to do is deliver a version of ASP that keeps pace with the Camera manufacturers, I'm not asking for more or improved bells & whistles .... I need ASP to work with today's cameras today.

Typically updates to raw converters show up a while after major new cams are released...
The interesting question is, what is major and what is "after a while" ;-)

First off ...... I want to utilize ASP and I want to see it thrive in the market place!!

ASP is my raw converter of choice ... right now ... I want that to continue
Typically updates to raw converters show up a while after major new cams are released...
The interesting question is, what is major and what is "after a while"
I didn't want to post this but maybe this will help explain my questions and concerns

This is on the the net for all to see:

*************

New Camera Support in Lightroom 4.0
Canon EOS 1D X
Canon PowerShot G1 X
Canon PowerShot S100V
Fuji FinePix F505EXR
Fuji FinePix F605EXR
Fuji FinePix HS30EXR
Fuji FinePix HS33EXR
Fuji FinePix X-S1
Nikon D4
Nikon D800
Nikon D800E

*************

The Fuji X100 was already supported.

The list of cameras above go from Pro to consumer, ...... my main concern is with the Pro level cameras.

The EOS-1D X had yet to be delivered yet it is supported by some software ... this is how to obtain & maintain customers!

Having competition is not a bad thing .... I am a devoted Canon user from the the days of the F1, but I'm glad that Nikon manufacture cameras, they keep Canon on the move and developing.

My sincere hope is that Corel is able and willing to do the same ........ they have stiff competition ....

With a new product ....... now's the time to prove they are a major player not a straggler ....... you only get so many kicks at the cat before the cats run away.

Adobe seems to get advance samples.....
It would be nice if Corel could pull that off, but that requires cooperation form the cam manufacturers and Adobe has a bit more leverage there than Corel...

And Apple just put out an update as well.

http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1510

Canon PowerShot G1 X
Nikon D4
Panasonic LUMIX DMC-GX1
Panasonic LUMIX DMC-FZ35
Panasonic LUMIX DMC-FZ38
Samsung NX200
Sony Alpha NEX-7
Sony NEX-VG20

I'm sure some day I will get the new whatever camera and I hope not to have to wait too long. We'll see what the update cycle is on ASP by then.

Wouldn't it be nice if Corel would send the camera ICC profiles of new cameras to registered users, without the need of an updated program. If they don't want to send them, they could have a download page so we could pick and choose our profiles.

Not that I don't want an update, but I feel the pain of having a shiny new camera with no ASP support as it's happened to me.

That assumes an ICC Profile is sufficient, which unfortunately is not always the case....

Seems that Corel management still needs to learn one or two things about new camera releases and raw image software development. Shame on them and woe on us.

Anyway, trying to be more constructive: Corel could release dynamic link libraries which would implement support to new cameras without making a major release of the software. I know it may not be that easy, as even dcraw is not constructed that way - but what the heck, that would be a solution.

Not that I don't want an update, but I feel the pain of having a shiny new camera with no ASP support as it's happened to me.
Unfortunately it's not quite as simple as an ICC profile.
Each CCD has a slightly different layout and so is a custom development.
Thinks like the Nikon P7000 upgrade to the P7100 is simple as it is really on a header details change.
Something like the Fuji X100 and the recent XPro1 from Fuji change require a dedicated development of support for the CCD. The XPro1 is non-Bayer so is even more difficult to support.

As 'afx' says Adobe have 'inside' information as to the layout as they have collaborations with Nikon and Canon (AFAIK) but I dont know if Corel have these agreements so they need to do it via trial and error or educated guesses.

Regarding beta testing there is an ongoing beta test program and yes we are all under NDA so cannot say what is in or out of test. All I can say is that the team are dedicated to providing for everyone the best product in the shortest space of time. Prior to the Corel acquisition the Bibble team were severely resource limited. Hopefully Corel will provide the necessary funds to get ASP back to be a premier product that rivals Lighroom and Capture Pro in both features and quality.
For me the Lightroom interface for the development module doesnt work but other parts of it are very good. I find Capture Pro very good but slower to use as I dont use it all the time. For me ASP has the best interface and is the fastest product to use (OK I am a Bibble user since 2002).
Still learning after all these years!

If you look at the Bibble software releases, they seemed to be releasing new updates pretty often. Fixing bugs, adding new cameras.

It's not a nice thought ..... it's the way it should be.

Corel with the introduction of ASP have thrown themselves into a highly competitive arena with the likes of Adobe & Apple. (As if they weren't already competing with them)

Coming up with a myriad of excuses why we don't have certain camera profiles isn't the solution .......... it's an excuse to be second rate.

Again I don't want anything for free, I understand the costs of software engineering, just get it done and make it available ..... I"LL PAY ..... that's the bottom line

If not then our hard earned money needs to go to a product that delivers and a Company that has the ability to stay up to date.

As I've already stated I agree with jknights ASP is the software I would like to be able to use.

But am I to invest close to another $10,000.00 dollars in equipment to shoot JPG's so I can use ASP ....... ain't gonna happen

ASP is an excellent product with a bright future ......... but Corel ..... get the specs you require and build the profiles ....... I repeat Today's cameras need to be supported today.

Just tell me where to send the money ... I'll gladly pay for the update!

Regards

Mike
