I use Corel Videostudio PRO X4 for my video editing. Then, one day I downloaded Vegas Movie Studio 11 Platinum and tried it out. The level of complexity between the two is enormous. Things that are easily done in Corel are more envolved in Vegas. Moving around with a storyboard editor, in Corel, is a simple matter. When you only have a timeline (Vegas,) it's a *** to locate and move around efficiently with 50 to 60 clips or more. You must edit in small packets.
Also, in rendering, I was in for a big surprise-few talk about this. The author of "101 Tips, Tricks and Techniques," Bill Myers substantiated what I found out through experience. A one hour video, with many effects, can take over five hours to render in Vegas. I hate to think how long my European Trip Video, of over two hours, would have taken-over night to be sure. Apparently, Vegas lovers are not bothered by this fact. So, rendering and fexibility of movement are Vegas shortfalls to me.
Now that I mentioned the bad, here is the good. Vegas is extremely powerful in motion video, color correction, chroma key, and Pan/Zoom. It blows Corel away, to mention only these few things of which there are more. It takes a steep learning curve but, it is well worth the effort. "Nothing good of consequence is ever accomplished without exertion." So, I use Vegas for clip editing and effects and then put clips into Corel for quick rendering and flexibility. I take the best from both and with excellent result My videos produced by Corel are vivid, rich in color and clarity that I don't think waiting an extra four hours, or more, can noticeably improve upon.

I think you've swerved into the reality of video editing software.
There is no single software (under $200 anyway) that does "everything".
It makes me wonder which software(s) the pros use, say on HGTV, TLC, etc. use to edit their shows.
I emailed TLC once about this and never received an answer.

Up until about a year ago, Apple's Final Cut Pro was extremely popular among editing professionals and was the talk of the industry. However, the latest version is not so popular with industry pros, and many are moving to Avid. Avid always retained a following at the very high end, but now the mid-to-high level pros are also moving to Avid.

I've been an engineer in the television industry for (mumblety-mumblety) years and have seen all the trends at the annual National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) convention. I used to be on the staff of TV Technology magazine (I was the technology editor) and have covered the NAB as a reporter for 15 years. I still freelance as a reporter/photographer and will be going to the NAB again in a month to do more of the same for TV Technology and other industry publications. The NAB is in Las Vegas on April 16-20, if you think you can attend. LOTS of editing technology there, and it will be mind-blowing for some of you who wonder about the technology.

I can probably point you toward a recent article about the industry's unhappiness with the most recent version of Final Cut Pro, if anyone is interested.

I know FCP users personally that have not upgraded to the latest version in spite of all the promises from Apple to fix what was missing in the future. There are grumblings about Apple's desktop market being discontinued in favor of laptops.
Right now, Apple is making money all over the place with iPads, iPhones, and iPods. The NLE desktop market isn't that big in the Apple scheme of things. I am sure they sell more laptops than desktops too.

Avid has done some good lately in lowering the price and now working with 3rd party hardware. For me, it's still overkill (Media Composer), while I thought that Pinnacle Liquid was awesome and a perfect NLE for me. It was basically killed once Avid bought Pinnacle. FAST/Edition/Liquid was designed to be a direct competitor to Media Composer for much much less. Politics, you gotta love it.
