File format mismatch with stills

Post by ottawaguy04 »

I'm trying to insert stills into my project and I keep getting the "file format mismatch" error. I've tried JPG, PNG and even bitmap formats, I've tried different pictures from different cameras/sources and the result is the same every time. Any ideas?

Could you tell us exactly how you are importing the photos and to where - straight to the timeline or to a library - and what option are you choosing to do it - on the face of it it sounds like you are not selecting the correct import option - but you explain and we'll see.

just so we don't go off on the wrong track - could you also tell us which version of VideoStudio you are using.

I have VS X5. I have X4 on my computer, X5 was an upgrade.

I started getting File Format Mismatchs soon after I finished installing X5. if I go into %appdata% ulead systems->corel videostudio pro and delete the directory 15.0 the system will start working again, but your system gets reset to default state.

There is a systemic flaw in the system that continually corrupts the still's database.

I have given up trying to use X5 for all but the simplist projects, it does seem to work faster but I cant use it for more then one project before it screws up.

I have have stopped potential problems like disk fragmentation and Anti Virus from touching the appdata directory.

Maybe after the first service pack it might be usable

You may have noticed my post of 29 April concerning difficulty importing .cr2 files into v.X5. That has now been resolved with the news that X5 does not support this format. I am left, though, with the general problem that my upgrade from v.X4 does not recognise still photos of any description and, in particular, .jpg. This sounded like the issue which you had raised and I wonder whether you were able to find a solution?

I shall appreciate any input you are able to offer.

Hi Guys

Normant / MrdavePa / ottawaguy04

Can you answer Brians question relating to how you are trying to import the images to the library.

There are several methods in doing this,

File-Insert Media File to Timeline-Insert Photo

Right Click timeline and select Insert Photo

Using Windows Explorer Drag the file to the timeline

Library
Using the Import Media Files folder, top left of library.

Right click library....Inser Media Files

MrdavePa
Make sure you are not inserting VSP project files to the library.
Doing this by mistake can cause many problems with Mismatches along with other errors.
Right click a clip and select properties, make sure they are not VSP Project files

Normant
I work with images quite a lot, most of my movies are a mix of video and image slide shows.
I just don't have problems
There were some issues with the order in which VS displayed them, but no issues in using images.

Again guys tell us exactly how you are inserting the images, which buttons are you pressing

Hi guys

I have exactly the same problem: every time I try to import an image (JPG, PNG, BMP, whatever) I get a "file format mismatch" error (this is the code I see at the bottom of the alert popup: [16803:1:3]).

The strange thing is that while I was in the free trial I was sometimes (let's say 1 out of 5 times) able to import images, today I upgraded to the paid version and it fails every single time with any image format (BTW, if I try to import GIF files they are imported as videos with 1 frame... WTF?!?)

This is really annoying!! Anybody got any clue on how to solve this?

My system details:
Corel Video Studio PRO 15.0.0.258
Windows 7 Home Premium (Service Pack 1)

Thanks y all! :)

You talk about 'import' of images. Our terminology here is to 'insert' images. So I am just wondering exactly how you go about importing your images. Needless to say, an awful lot of people here using exactly that version of X5 have no trouble at all inserting all sorts of images...

Hi Ken

thanks for your reply. I used ALL of the methods mentioned for inserting images:
  • File-Insert Media File to Timeline-Insert Photo
  • Right Click timeline and select Insert Photo
  • Using Windows Explorer Drag the file to the timeline
  • Library: Using the Import Media Files folder, top left of library.
  • Right click library....Inser Media Files
They all give me the same exact error I mentioned above. And I imagine there are scores of people who don't have this problem but I don't see very well how this could make me feel better about my inability to insert any image in my movies... ;)

Hi picouli

Very strange that some users are having this problem, i think it is the first time it has been reported.

Video studio library has quite a few images, i see 28, all jpeg
are you able to access the libraries photo page?
-------------------------
Video Studio can create its own images by using the Snapshot option, by default it would create BMP, from F6 preferences-capture can be changed to Jpeg.

Drag a video clip to the timeline, then Edit-Take a Snapshot.
the file will be saved to the working folder with a thumbnail placed in the library.
Does that work?

Hi picouli

Video Studio installation...things to try....

Did you install the program using Administrator rights?
As a user do you have admin rights?

To run the program, right click Corel VideoStudioX5 and select "run as administrator"

Try running the program in Windows XP service pack 3 Compatibility mode.

Sorry guys to bring back this oldish thread but I'm still not able to import any image in my video project... This morning the software got an update (I guess SP1) and I hoped that could solve the problem but no luck.

What happens is simple: I open the dialog to import an image (JPEG, GIF, PNG, BMP, whatever) and when I click on it the software gives me a "Wrong file format" (or something like that, I've got the software in Italian - I see this code at the bottom of the popup: [16803:1:3])

The very strange things are:
- even images in the library are "broken"
- every once in a while the software is kind enough to let me open an image file, but this happens very very rarely

And yes, I tried to run it as Administrator but same results. And lata, thanks for your reply but I didn't understand what you mean by "running the program in Windows XP service pack 3 Compatibility mode".

Thanks everybody!

Hi picouli

I had a similar problem with the wifes laptop running W7 64 bit.

The library showed some of the images in the wrong folder as though installed on a 32bit system.

Not sure if running in compatibility mode or run as admin cured the problem.

From your desktop---Right click the program icon, choose properties, compatibility tab........
---------------------
As a test I just opened X5 on W7 without compatibility and i have problems?

Hey Lata

looks like this is doing the trick - even if I'm not 100% sure yet as sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't and it could be the "sometimes" when it worked.

Thanks anyway for your support, ciao!
