video is jumping/jerking/skipping

Post by jcarsten »

Hi guys,

I'm a relative noob on Corel (I have Pro X4) and video editing in general. I like to think I've got a knack for it but the technical aspects are totally lost on me! My primary concern is the video (avi file) is jumping when I drag portions of it into the timeline. It plays fine in the library, but when I drag it into the timeline the clip will jump/skip/jerk. Is there a way to correct this? Do I have to alter some settings? I have a decent (not amazing) Toshiba L650 4GB RAM laptop that is relatively new. Surely seeing as I'm only just adding the first clips in (there is already a 10 minute sound track in place) it shouldn't be jumping already should it?

My only other question for now is is the overlay track virtually the same as the video track? I prefer using the overlay track as I can drop videos anywhere on the video as opposed to it defaulting to the start. All I do is drag the corners out to make it the same size as what it would have been in the video track.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks! :D

Hi

Welcome to the forums.

Should the problem be computer related can you fill in your profile to include your PC specification.
Click the User Control Panel link top left., and have you actually installed the program on the “B” drive?

There is a post at the top of the forum Please Read This before Posting gives an idea of the information required.

What version of video studio are you using?

Avi is just a container there are some 800 varieties of Avi.
Right click a clip in the timeline and select properties, what are they?

Highly compressed types can be difficult to edit, downloaded from the internet etc.
Where did you get the video files from.

High Definition types may need Smart Proxy, this creates virtual clips allowing VS smoother playback.
These do take some time to create, View Smart Proxy File and Queue Manager

The overlay tracks are similar to the top main track, but you need a full timeline otherwise your video will have empty sections.
Most use the top track for the main video content.

Clips in the overlay track can be re-sizes, right click the clip in the preview screen for re-size/anchor options.
There is an option via Preferences to fill the screen when inserting clips to the overlay track.

Thanks so much for your help lata. :D

I have filled in the details in my profile.

I am using Coral VideoStudio Pro X4.

Below is where I right clicked on the file on the timeline. I did indeed download from the internet.

Does this provide any clues as to what might be causing this?

Hi
and i slept well Ken, in fact couldn't get out of bed this morning

The video does indeed look non-standard, a frame rate of 592 x 336 is practically 16:9 shape but very small.
You mentioned having an audio clip in the timeline. Try a new project and only add the video file.
If the problem persists.
Update Quick Time Player to the latest version, does that help.

And MP3 audio can be problematic.

Eventually you will have to re-render your video to a more suitable format depending on what you are intending to make.
What are you making with the video a DVD (gonna be poor quality) or clip for the internet?

It may be best to convert the file before editing.

If you do not have video converting software then many on the forum use a program called “Super”

Hi lata,

I have 3 MP3 files in my video, could that be contributing?

The atttributes of that piece of video were just a 5 second cutting of the main video in my library, which is over an hour and is 696MB (it is a DVD documentary I downloaded from a P2P). I dragged the whole video into the timeline though and it gave me the same attributes, so I guess it doesn't really matter?

I don't really use Quicktime so would it help updating it?

I want my video to be the best quality possible for youtube but without exceeding their bandwith limits (I have downloaded "Super" so what would the best format be?) I make videos like the below, which is one of my older ones. As mentioned, I think I have the knack but just no technical expertise whatsoever. All the ones in my youtube account were done on movie maker.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f464vCjZQ0k

I'm at a loss because it's taken a good 7 or 8 minutes of video and audio for my video to jump on older laptops with far worse specifications, yet I've only dropped in a couple of short clips with audio in the timeline so far and it's jumping already. :(

Hi

Mpeg 4 and Quicktime are basically the same.

We have had two main problems with Quicktime.
Random crashes of video studio and you should install an earlier version 7.5.5 would do.
Unable to open or read Mpeg4 types correctly and you should install the latest versions.
Yep they contradict each other.

Updating Quicktime may help, no need for I-Tunes

Super

Use similar settings as the original.
Convert to MP4
Frame size 1280 x 720 is (16:9) a standard that you tube would except.
---------------------
Your video file is very long, you could try converting a short section using Video Studio.
If the problem is simply playback then rendering may be successful.
Choose Share – Upload to Web choose the youtube 16:9 option.
When complete simply close the upload window.
Does the new file play ok

Sorry not quite sure what you mean here?

I tried making the video in DVD 16:9 (I couldn't find the youtube 16:9 option?). It's 10 minutes of audio and only 30 seconds of video so far.

It seems as if it is playing fine in the actual video. :) Thanks. My problem still remains though in that it jumps in the timeline, so I can't accurately time my video to music.

Hi

Ok do a test

Save the project ........ File “Save as” call it “test”

Delete/remove the audio from the timeline, the project contains the 30 second video file.

Select the Share tab
Upload to Web is the last option below the library.
Choose YopuTube Mpeg 4 HD 16:9

The Project will be converted to a Mpeg4 file, you will be prompted to upload, simply close the window.

A thumbnail has been placed in the library.
Drag this to the timeline to replace the original video file
Does the new file play ok?

Hi lata, sorry I have been on holiday.

So would you say it would be wise to convert all video I have downloaded off the web to MPEG-4 so that it becomes a similar quality and also reduces the file size, so no jumping?

Hi

Hope you enjoyed your holiday.

If you are saying that the test to convert cured your playback problem then yes convert all the video files.
Unless you can download the files again and use the standard settings.

The Upload to Web option for HD uses these settings to convert the video.

MPEG-4 Files
24 bits, 1280 x 720, 25 fps
Frame-based
H.264 Main Profile Video: 5000 Kbps
44100 Hz, 16 Bit, Stereo
MPEG AAC Audio: 128 Kbps

I am in the UK and using Pal that uses 25 fps.
I would have to use Make Movie Templates Manager to create my own template, I would then be able to set 30fps which matches the original file.

Hi lata,

Sorry I'm a real novice and didn't understand much of that.

I'll try converting overnight to HD MPEG 4 (it's taking ages as it's a 700MB file) and see what happens.

Cheers!
