Linux: Install ASP trial alongside Bibble 5

Post by sigdrifa »

Hiya,

I have Bibble 5 Pro right now on Ubuntu 11.10. I would like to look into AfterShot Pro to see if it's worth upgrading. Can I safely install the trial without causing problems with my Bibble 5 installation? So far I've been reluctant to just test it since I'm heavily depending on B5, but I'd really like to try it.

Thanks

I have not tried this on ubuntu, but I have done it on arch Linux without any problems. It should be perfectly safe to install both.

Hi

I run Linux Mint 12, which is an Oneiric derivative, and have had no problems keeping both, and keeping them separate. I am sure that isn't the reason that the authors changed the approach to catalog importation; but the effect is to keep them both separate.

One word of caution. It has been widely reported that the two programs give different results to the same user inputs (or stored xmp). So don't judge ASP on the fact that it gives results different to those you were expecting. It's like changing your car. Most things operate on exactly the same principle, some require you to adapt your foot and hand gestures, and some things have new names for old functions.

Enjoy the trial

Also realise that ASP will read most built-in B5 settings for an image previously edited n B5, and so changing them will also change the B5 rendition, should you wish to return to B5. To make matters more confusing, some plugins will read their B5 settings and some won't, so depending on which plugins you used, the initial results in ASP for an image that was edited in B5 may be roughly similar or quite different.

(This is a comment about file system mode - not sure about catalogs).

I had no problems trying out ASP before doing the jump. The key to not get in troubble is catalogs.

1. Write Bibble XMPs for all your catalogs.
2. Import all your folders into new ASP catalogs.
Bibble5 and ASP can now work side by side. Edits in one does not affect edits in the other. Only thing is that you must take care to always work with images from the catalog, not file system. This way B5 wont choke on ASP XMPs.

So far I've not encountered any serious problems with ASP on Ubuntu 11.10. I've had a couple of crashes and problems because of some bad behaving plugins, but it seems to be sorted out now. Some things were better in B5 and some things are better in ASP. All in all I feel ASP is an upgrade. :D
