Hi,
currently my workflow with commandline tools in Ubuntu 10.04 looks like this:
* import images
* view and delete images
* rename images
* modify exif/iptc data and jpg comment
I would like to use your ASP for some parts of this work, but I failed at the beginning:
1.) Removal of Master Versions
When I navigate to the folder (File System) containing my images I can remove (delete) an image - ASP asks "Confirm Removal of Master Versions". As soon as I want to repeat this action with other images, ASP does not react at all when I press the [DEL] button - other actions work.
When I minimize ASP and bring it to the front again it works (again just once).
2.) Rename multiselected images does not work if Image View is active
When I multiselect images in the Thumbnail View and right-click the mouse => Version => Rename Version I get the window "Rename Versions". But pressing OK only the active image is renamed instead of all selected images.
When I disable the Image View and repeat the same action again in the Thumbnail View it is working as expected.
3.) Modify Metadata with Multiselect in "File System"
It did not work to multiselect images and modify their metadata, just the active one was modified. I tried it without Image View but no success.
4.) Calling commandline tool exiftool
Is there a way to call exiftool directly from ASP to modify/add data directly in the image instead of the XMP file?
Regards,
MiKa

import and rename can be easily done in one.MiKa wrote:* import images

Looks like the keyboard forcus is lost.1.) Removal of Master Versions
When I navigate to the folder (File System) containing my images I can remove (delete) an image - ASP asks "Confirm Removal of Master Versions". As soon as I want to repeat this action with other images, ASP does not react at all when I press the [DEL] button - other actions work.
When I minimize ASP and bring it to the front again it works (again just once).
As deleting single images is a bit inefficient anyway, I suggest tagging all rejects and then delete the rejects at the end of the session.
Image view??2.) Rename multiselected images does not work if Image View is active
This sounds like multiview is active.
When multiview is active, all those actions only work on the currently hot image.
Use (selective) copy&paste instead.3.) Modify Metadata with Multiselect in "File System"
It did not work to multiselect images and modify their metadata, just the active one was modified. I tried it without Image View but no success.
The keyword tool will work on multiple images though.
No.4.) Calling commandline tool exiftool
Is there a way to call exiftool directly from ASP to modify/add data directly in the image instead of the XMP file?
Only for modifying generated files.
What are you using exiftools for?
cheers

Re: [File System]: Rename w. Multiselect / Removale of Maste
Hi afx, thx for your fast reply!

I am not sure whether I got you with "selective" copy&paste. Do you mean I should paste these tags separately for each image? I am tagging every photo, so this would not be a workaround but a nightmare
Up to know I am using freeware tools. The decission to spend some money for a graphical tool will be based on the result how to cover my used workflow which is platform independent and tool independent. So my focus is on preparing my photos for the archive which is filesystem based.

MiKa
Since I have an increasing number as prefix I prefer to rename the images after deleting the unused.afx wrote: import and rename can be easily done in one.

I am using the JPG comment since this information is stored as plain text and searcheable on every plattform by simple searchtools.afx wrote:4.) Calling commandline tool exiftool

Then I don't get the double delete? After having deleted all rejects there is no focused image anyway?MiKa wrote:I am doing it this way.afx wrote:As deleting single images is a bit inefficient anyway, I suggest tagging all rejects and then delete the rejects at the end of the session.
If you are tagging files individually, then you would not need it to apply to multiple images anyway.I am not sure whether I got you with "selective" copy&paste. For location and other non-keyword metadata, selective copy & paste (actually, I use copy sets) is quite efficient. For the keywords, the keyword tool can be used on multiple images.
So are IPTC and XMP... exiftools works just fineI am using the JPG comment since this information is stored as plain text and searcheable on every plattform by simple searchtools.
And in contrast to the exif comment field these are the standard places for serious imaging apps and DAMs.

Re: [File System]: Rename w. Multiselect / Removale of Maste
to clarify:
"Selective Copy/Paste" is a copy/paste with an extra window that lets you select what you want to copy.
Copy Sets are the same just without the window - you set what you want to copy in the Preferences.
if you need the Exif Comment for some weirdo website or funny software that relies on it,
use an exiftool script in the output batchQ to copy the IPTC-Caption to the ExifComment.
that would be the proper way to handle your metadata.
