Opening VS4 Project in VS5?

Post by wstagner »

Any one know if this was implemented?

Certainly couldn't open an X3 in X4. If I wanted to edit/burn my X4 in the "faster" X5, why should I essentially start from scratch to take advantage of X5?

Project would be SAVED as an X5 project file, of course.

Any comments :?:

(First of all, let me say THANKS!!! for your tip about Corel's one week special sale on VS Pro X5 Ultimate.)

I haven't tested this process as I don't yet have VS Pro X5, but it works when moving a project from VS Pro X3 to VS Pro X4.

If you have a completed (or partially-completed) project edited in VS Pro X4 that you want to edit using VS Pro X5, I suggest that you first launch VS Pro x4 and save your project as a SMART PACKAGE on your hard drive.

Then, close VS Pro X4 and launch VS Pro X5. Now open the .VSP file contained within the SMART PACKAGE folder. The project should now load into VS Pro X5 and be ready for editing (or re-editing) using the new app.

Of course, the reverse usually does not succeed. A project edited and saved with VS Pro X5 can not be successfully opened/edited by an earlier version of VS.

Am I making sense?

Hi wstagner

You could always open a VSP in newer versions of Video Studio.
If you are having problems in doing this then something is wrong.

Bob
Opening a VSP in an earlier version is also possible, generally being able to go back two versions.
First you have to save the project for an earlier version.

File –Save As, the “save as” window has the option to select a “Save as Type”
Click the down arrow to expand the box..
Using Video Studio X4 you have the option to choose X3 or X2.

I assume X5 will give the option X4 and X3.

Walt - - can't help feeling something is very very wrong with your computer or the installation of VideoStudio - referring to your post above - I have ALWAYS been able to open a .vsp from a previous version in a later version - I have just installed X5 and successfully opened a project I was working on in X4. Previously in X4 I had opened .vsp files from X2 and V11 without any problems at all - no need to do anything special just in videoStudio click 'file >> open' and browse to any version .vsp and it opens without any problems. It's when you want to open a X5 in X4 you have to do a special save as.

in another post you comment that you always get an unspecified error if you uncheck 'motion menu' when burning a DVD - I almost never use a motion menu so mine is always unchecked and I always change the music and in every version I have used I have never had an error in the burning module.

As I say - I think there is a real problem on your PC.

Brian, if what you say is true about the burning module, then there's something wrong with the 4 pooters where x4 and prior versions are installed. This 2 windoze7 pooters, an Xp pooter and and Xp virtual machine.

This is quite unlikely since all were clean installs from the Corel CD (I never buy the download versions).
Movie Factory 7 pro and SE have have same problem.
Me thinx insufficient testing has been done in this area and I can duplicate this anytime as can another gentleman on this board whose name I can't recall.
I'll bet someone could find that threat on this board tho.

I've even reported this bug (along with at least one other person) and we've been ignored.

Also, when I open X3 or X4 I always get the NAG screen even when I tick the do not display this message again box.
If Corel wants to continue to NAG me about upgrading, don't give me the option to disable. That's what they've done here.

By default when you open a project in X3 the dialog defaults to X3 vsp files and x4 defaults to X4 vsp files.

I am not quite sure what you are trying to say here. Of course they default to the version in which they open. But if you go to Save As, you have the option to save in the vsp format of either of the previous two versions as an alternative to the current version.

What I'm trying to say is that VS should "know" which version the VSP files and the drop down should ask which version you WANT to open.

To answer your question YES!

VSP files from old version of videostudio can be open using the latest version. But the problem is that project file (VSP) from newer version of videostudio may not open unless (Like what lata said) you save that VS file specify that it can be open by old versions of VideoStudio.

Hi wstagner

To open a Video Studio Project.

First launch Video Studio the latest version you have,
Click file-Open Project – navigate your hard drive to find the Project VSP file.
Projects created by earlier versions will open.
-------------------------

When you are navigating via Windows Explorer viewing in “detail view” the type column
may indicate the file as being say Corel VideoStudio 12.0 Document, the version number may not reflect the latest versions being used.

If you navigate Windows Explorer and double click the file VSP to automatically open the program then either an earlier version of the program may open, or you receive an error.

But this does not stop projects being opened in the latest versions, Open the projects after running Video Studio via File Open Project
