Kerning in PSPX3

Post by Cassel »

I am experiencing an odd "problem" when using PSPX3. If i have some text, entered in the Text Entry window and want to change the Kerning, what i type in the kerning setting gets typed in the Text Entry window after the first character, meaning i can NOT change the kerning by typing a value. Anyone else experienced that?

This happened on my desktop at home. This morning, i wanted to test the same issue on my laptop at work but as soon as i open X3, it closes. No error message, it just opens and closes so i cannot test the same problem on a different machine.

I don't remember if it happened right away or not for me.

I know that with the number boxes if you type something in, especially in X3, it'll update the display then re-focus on the text making the next thing you type in be entered as text. With numbers the wait time was very short but if you were slow about entering the value it would update before you were finished. If the Kerning is acting differently and just updating right away I never knew. But the time between entering the value and the text updating is very short, even in X4.

Ah, i see. It never happened to me in X4, i guess i was faster, but in X3, while i was recording a workshop and doing a demonstration, i was going slower for the viewers. I can see now that it also does that in X4. I will still report that as a bug because it definitely can affect the workflow, especially when you end up loosing a long text to a digit while trying to adjust the kerning precisely.

Thanks

Oh I know. It's one of the reasons I want them to add an "undo" option while editing text.

With X4 (since my X3 does close all the time here), i can replicate the problem with the Tracking value but not the Leading value. Does it happen also in other settings?

For the most part all of the dialogs were the same in how long it would take for them to time-out after a key was pressed. Size took the longest to update though. The rest were pretty much even.

I reported about all the buggy input boxes in Formatting Text in X3 about 6 months after it was released. Apparently it had not been reported before and it was very hard to convince support to actually test themselves. Sent lots of screenshots and they finally agreed it was there and was sending to developer. That was it. No Patch ever fixed it and 18 months later X4 comes out and it is still the same. The only improvement in X4 was that scrolling returned to the Font Name, but still not as good as pre X3.
Before X3 one could type in numbers to those boxes to change the settings, use the up/down arrows or scroll. With X3 none of these options worked correctly. When one types the 2nd number the box loses focus and it returns to the highlighted text and that number then replaces that highlighted text. The only way around it is to type very fast. Using the scroll wheel also doesn't work because after 1 scroll the focus returns to the page, same with arrows.
The first time it happened I was so not impressed. Had about 15 lines of a poem highlighted and bingo, in the flash of an eye all my text was gone and a number was sitting there. As I hadn't saved the text first there was no way to get it back.
For me now PSP is worthless for any decent formating processes. All that is now done with trustworthy X.
More input box bugs have been introduced in X4 also.
If they would just for once halt pushing new versions at us and take some time to get the program back to its former shape without all these new added bugs to processes that weren't broken before it would have a much better name and would show that they give some thought to their purchasers.
