GoPro VSX2 Sound Issue
Folks.....Sorry if this gets posted twice but I hit an unknown key during the preview and everything disappeared. So here goes again...
I got a GoPro 960 for Christmas and LOVE IT. I recently took it skiing along with my HP DV6000 Laptop (Centrino Duo T5500 1.66 gHz) Windows 7 Pro for viewing and Video Studio X2 (12.0.98.1 Pro) for editing. In Windows Media Player the GoPro clips play prefectly. However, in Video Studio X2 in the Edit phase the sound is totally messed up and the video ok, but choppy. I've seen the choppy issues before, but that usually goes away when I render the project. In this case, that is also true but the sounds issue is not resolved, either MPG or WMV formats.
I can fiddle with the clips using Super to get them to work (AVI container, MPEG-4 video and MP3 audio), but that is an extra and slow step which I would like to avoid.
Rendering also seems long compared to the DV files which I transfer from my Sony DCR HC-96e camcorder. A 3 minute clip took over an hour to render.
Any ideas?
Thanks....RDK45

There is a sticky post towards the top of this forum dealing with GoPro and Video Studio. See http://forum.corel.com/EN/viewtopic.php ... 01#p222801 Although it deals with VS X, you may get some pointers from it.

Re: GoPro VSX2 Sound Issue
Ken....Thanks, I did do a search on GoPro and read through that Sticky. However, I'm reluctant to apply a Video Studio X4 patch to my Video Studio X2 install. By the way, my install is at SP1 and also with the Windows 7 patch.
I have Video Studio X4 setting on the shelf waiting until I rebuild my Video Editing PC with a new motherbaord and i7 CPU.....RDK45

Hi
If you have X4 then install it, you can leave X2 installed.
Maybe X4 will improve the performance of the GoPro video?

Thanks Trevor....Since I have only one license, I'm saving the X4 version for my video editing PC, when I get it rebuilt. Right now it is running Video Studio 10+, albeit slowly....RDK45

This was related to X3 but I think it will be relevant to X4
Besides I thought you were using X2 aka VS12 and not VS10??
I have X4 installed on two PC’s but only use one at a time.
If you are concerned then download the trial version, unless you have already done that.
On second thoughts you may be best to wait till you re-build the pc.

Re: GoPro VSX2 Sound Issue
Trevor.....Thanks again. Reading the post it looks like I can legally install my licensed box copy of Video Studio X4 on both my laptop and my edtiting PC (after I rebuild it). Thanks for the idea.
Now, to try to clarify the confusion.
I'm still looking for any ideas about the garbled sound issue...RDK45
Now, to try to clarify the confusion.
- I have Video Studio X2 on my laptop and that is the machine where I have tried to edit the GoPro videos and where I'm having the audio and choppiness issues.
- I have Video Studio 10+ Pro installed on my video editing PC. I have not tried to process any of these GoPro clips on it, and won't until I get it some more horsepower
I'm still looking for any ideas about the garbled sound issue...RDK45

Re: GoPro VSX2 Sound Issue
Hi
The audio problem, I assume you are seeing the problem after rendering / creating a new file.
A 3 minute clip took over an hour to render, this is a ridiculously long time.
Right click the original clip and select properties, what are they?
When you rendered the clip what did you choose Share Create Video File --- and is the option "Same as first video" available.
Before you hit the Save button, choose Options and deselect Smart Render.
--------------------
The fix mentioned by Ken, I would try it even if it’s a different version, if it makes the program unstable then you can always revert to the old file.
--------------------
The Go Pro Camera probably came with some software, installing this may install codecs required by the camera’s video files.
---------------------
Video Studio provides Smart Proxy, this is required for slower pc’s when editing HD video.
Make sure Smart Proxy is enabled and that proxy files have been created, they do take some time to create. However Smart Proxy should not affect the render nor times to render.

Re: GoPro VSX2 Sound Issue
Trevor...Thanks for your continued help. Below I will attempt to answer your questions:
I have the garbled audio both in the Visual Studio X2 Edit mode and in the rendered WMV or MPG files.
When I go to Share, yes the option for "same as first clip" is available and, if I select it, it has these file settings
Normally I click on "Custom" and specify these settings, and "Smart Render' is checked by default
When I import a GoPro clip into Video Studio X2, right cick I see these properties:

Re: GoPro VSX2 Sound Issue
Trevor....Well, not sure what I was looking at yesterday, but I must not have been loading a GoPro clip (perhaps it was one I ran through Super??), anyway the clip properties are totally different than reported above. Here are the Video Studio X2 properties of a known GoPro clip:
I followed your advice regarding the VS X4 dll upgrade and have not noticed any positive or negative effects with the upgraded dll.
What I have discovered is the Smart Proxy takes a VERY long time to process these files. A 22 minute 2+GB GoPro clip took almost an hour to complete the Smart Proxy processing. Hardly seems worth it?
Relating to the original posted issue, sound, I have also discovered is that, if I wait 2-3 minutes after loading the above 2 GB clip into Video Studio X2 and then play the clip in Video Studio, it shows neither the choppiness nor garbled sound and editing is reasonably responsive! This is true whether I have enabled Smart Proxy or not. When rendered, the video is fine however sound is either totally gone (AVI) or garbled (MPG).
As I noted above, these GoPro clips play perfectly in Windows Media Player, so I would assume the codecs are on the laptop somewhere?
A comment on Smart Proxy, I changed the folder for storing these proxy files from the system partition to a different one. However, Video Studio seems to have ignored this and is still storing them on the system drive.
Have not installed Video Studio X4 on my laptop yet but it is now on the list, but need to do a backup first.
Thanks again for your comments and assistance......RDK45

Re: GoPro VSX2 Sound Issue
Hi
I assume you are still working with VS12.
A newer version X5 has been released to day. That makes your VS12 3 versions old.
Can you download and install the trial X5.
I don’t know when you purchased your box version of X4 but there is a 30 day money back guarantee?
------------------------------------
Thanks for the updated info on the video files, I am unable to create a template using these properties. At some point the video will be rendered using different settings.
Does the camera have other settings you can try?
By the way is Attributes 48000Hz, 18 Bit Stereo a typo should it be 48000Hz, 16 Bit Stereo
------------------------------------
Smart Proxy, creating the files does take some time. Once created your timeline playback should improve.
If you have changed the location of the proxy folder then I would delete all files in the old folder.

Re: GoPro VSX2 Sound Issue
Trevor....Yes, those were typo's - typing was never my strong suit. I will edit that posting to correct.
As an experiment, I split off the audio track and tried to create a WAV file with just the audio. Result was the garbled audio that I have observed with the MPG rendering. No joy....
My box copy is early January, so I'm past the 30 day period. I will install anyway and see what happens with regards to my GoPro issues.

GoPro 960 has these three resolution settings:
- 16:9 Wide Angle
Standard DefinitionVideo WVGA (848x480)
50 fps
When smaller file size and highest frame rate is desired
- 16:9 HD Video 720p (1280 x 720)
25 fps
When mounting on vehicles or gear, when a very wide angle is desired but vertical viewing area is not as important
- (default resolution)
4:3 HD Video Max Overall Viewing Area. Same Width as 720p but 25% Taller
960p (1280 x 960)
25 fps
When mounting on your body, helmet, surfboard or chest harness, this mode offers the widest and tallest HD viewing area of all resolutions

Re: GoPro VSX2 Sound Issue
Hi
Not sure what to recommend next other than using Super, which is where you started and the only solution to work so far.
Have you updated Quick Time Player to the latest version.
Try the GoPro 1280 x 720 recordings as these use a standard frame size, rather than 1280 x 960.
Clutching at straws now……….
Non Square Pixel Rendering will not be used by Go Pro, try disabling this from the Options before rendering the files.
Can you provide a sample, I am willing to try it on my system.

Re: GoPro VSX2 Sound Issue
Trevor.....Sure, I can make a short video (10-30 sec, good enough??). How can I make it available to you?
I chose the 1280x960 resolution as I was using the GoPro camera while skiing. Many folks attach them to helmets, but I use a chest mount. With the deeper vertical size I get more of the ski slopes and also the sky and mountains. Sometimes the extra 25% make a difference.
Please note, the video is converting fine, the problems are totally with the audio.
This weekend I will image my system drive and then install Video Studio X4. I do this before any significant system or program changes.
Thanks again......RDK45

Hi
Sorry for the delay in replying,
A program called 4Shared.com seems to work quite well.
Another post has successfully downloaded via 4 Share here to view the post
The free version has a timer to slow the download but other than that no problems.
I know the problem is an audio one but did you use the 1280 x 720 recording option.
