Catalogs and updating

Post by seebee »

I am having trouble finding additional information about the updating of catalogs in the 'help' files. Is anyone familliar with them that can assist me please?
If I rename a folder (through Windows explorer) and then import this new folder into a Catalog, the existing .xmp information imports with it into the Catalog. This is good, but I can't get rid of the older folder from the Catalog. There is a right click option to close a catalog, but doesn't do what I was hoping it might. Is there a way to get rid of the older folder?

The catalog part of ASP could really need a bit of work dedicated to fixing some quirks. If you make changes to the underlying files the only way to have a catalog update is to re-import the images. This will however only add images to the catalog, it will not remove the ones you have deleted. The only way to solve your problem is to create a new catalog, import the files to this catalog, and delete you old catalog. Kind of akward, I agree....

Kind of awkward, better in the long run. Do you know if you can you simply delete the previous Catalog by dropping the main folder in the bin?

You just close the old catalog (Catalog->Close catalog) in ASP, and then you can just delete the catalog folder from the disk.

What effect does 'close the old catalog' have on the information held, apart from making it not visible within ASP?
Doesn't deleting the catalog folder from the disk leave remnants of data within ASP's catalog system/databases?

All information, including cache and database, is stored inside the catalogue. Except the images, of course.

So is it safe to delete the Catalog after closing it in ASP?
I see this includes various SQLite Databases and Caches.
