Post by OldNick »

Is it possible to edit a video, and have the putput format, frame rate, etc r3epeat the input? So edit scenes etc, but not alter the quality from input.

Thanks for any help

50p output?

Post by OldNick »

There does not seem to be any way to make a 50p output and in particular to choose 50fps if using the Make Movie Template Manager. In fact there I can't find a way to even choose 50 FPS.

Any advice on this appreciated.

Thanks in advance

When you go "Share >> Create Video File" choose "same as first video clip" to use the input properties as your output settings.

Hi Nick

Also from Settings – Preferences- (F6) tick Show Messages when Inserting First Video to Timeline

From a new project, the first clip added to the timeline MAY show a pop-up window prompting you to change the Project Properties to match the video file.
This option only works with some types of video, not all.

I assume this question is related to your Pal – NTSC issue

Once again...thanks for the replies. :)

The suggestion to use the first clip as the measure does not _quite_ answer my problem. What I want is to be able to set different frame sizes, bitrates etc, but have the Frame Rate match the source.

OK. to the nitty gritty. I have posted in a few places about this so if I repeat myself I am sorry. Rather than just looking for a way to matcg frame rate, I am still trying to source the trouble.

I am unable, in VS or any other programme that I have tried, to produce non-flickery video from my camera, unless I match the frame rate of the source file, by actually choosing that option, not by just using the same frame rate! I do have a couple of programmes that will fix this, but only because they match the frame rate of the camera. The flicker is a rapid (10ps or more) _regular_ (not at all like playback jolt or some sort of glitch in creating the file) blurring/flickering effect whenever something moves on screen, either panned background or moving subject. It judders, almost as if jumping back and forth between old frame new frame.

I was working in 50FPS, and thought that may be the trouble. But recently I tried shooting in 25fps, and even though I asked for 25fps, it was _still_ shuddery.

That is my problem. I either need to bow to it, or find a way to make sure I can match the source frame rate, whatever other settings I use.

The camera does use variable frame rate....??

Any help appreciated. I reckon this is a common problem, as I see a lot of TV that looks just the same.

I have posted up an example here

Hi

I think I covered most of my thoughts on converting 50 to 25 fps in the other post.

You say
The camera does use variable frame rate....??

Are you sure, looking at your properties I would say that 50fps video is Frame Based and not interlaced.

The 25fps camera option may well be Interlaced using Upper Field.
Make sure you use the same frame order as the original video file, changing this is going to add to the quality problem

One question, if you are not burning a DVD and simply playing the video on your PC, why go to the trouble of converting the video to 25fps?

Yeah I am sorry about ducking about. I am getting a bit desperate.

Again, sorry. You are way ahead of me. I am still learning all the ins and outs. Bitrate is variable, not frame. You cold well be right about 25fps. Somewhere I read that the camera produces VFR, but of course that may not be always.

As to why, a few things. (1) I am trying to be able to _edit_ the videos. (2) I want to be able to have high quality, but more compressed videos, so I can sharrre them more easily (at this stage this is moot  ) That may kinclude needing 25fps to make them more playable. (3) I just want it to _work_ :( (having smaller frames is still acceptable, and again allows MUCH smaller files.

You may be able to change the frame rate each time you record, but no consumer cam has a variable frame rate option while you are recording.
Although you should get acceptable quality when compressing down, you cannot get away from lowering quality to get smaller file sizes.

You need to look at what the end product is going to be, then decide on the route to take, settings to use etc.

Play on an HD tv that displays as progressive, shoot as 50p, edit as 50p, output as a bluray disc, or onto a medium that the tv can accept.

Play on an HD tv that displays as interlaced, you need to choose the interlaced i setting on your cam, then follow above.

Play on any tv via a dvd player, you'll need an interlaced file, so choose the i setting again and edit and output as an SD dvd-video disc.

Play via say Youtube or similar, check what the highest setting sthey us and if they are i or p, then opt for that setting on your cam and edit and outpout to the file dictated by your video site choice.

to email or share on your own web site, choose the p setting on cam, edit and output as a wmv of maybe flash file

There is a slight problem with that regarding Blu-Ray discs. At the moment, the international Blu-Ray standard only accepts 50p video (0r 60 for NTSC) which has a frame size of 1280 x 720. So you would have to downsize your 1920 x 1080 if you were burning a Blu-Ray disc at 50p. But I simply put my 50p video on a USB stick drive or an external hard disk which I then plug into my PlayStation 3 Blu-Ray player, which plays it back perfectly on my HDTV.

While talking of international standards, the one for standard definition DVDs will only allow video at a frame rate of 25/29.97 fps.
