Slow Burn with VideoStudio

Post by Sam Armstrong »

Whilst not a brand new user to VideoStudio I have found that I end up frustrated as, having completed my work and then trying to burn it that it takes such a long long time .... am I doing something blatently obviously wrong or is this typical?

I use the software to try to do short clips for Presentation Nights for our young rugby players here in the NW of England and have, a couple of times now, found myself just giving up!!! Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Ah Sam - it's difficult to say what your doing wrong when you haven't told us what you are doing. - but no a long burn is not typical (at least for me) but this is what I do - having finished all editing and saved my project I then go to "Share >> Create VideoFile" and make a DVD compliant mpeg-2 video, with a new but similar name to the project - this part will take a bit longer than the length of the video but for me not by a great amount. Next I play that video file on my computer usually in windows media player or perhaps Videostudio - that way I can see the complete video playing and whether all is as I wanted it to be. Next I go "Share >> Create Disc >> DVD" and when the burn module opens if there is anything at all in the timeline delete it so you have an empty timeline - then using the icons at the top of that window I import the new video file and either create a menu or not depending on my preference for that project - then go to the burn page and 'Burn' a DVD - for me this is usually a matter of a few minutes - I can sit and watch the burn without getting bored.

So walk us through how close your procedure is to the above, also tell us what format video you are starting with and what you are looking to end with and perhaps we can see where your delay is occurring. - might also help if you told us a bit more about your computer specs - could be your computer is struggling

I forgive you if that Rugby is not the 'proper' 15 man version.

Also tell us what your source file types are, if it needs to convert several different types it could take a while.
Tell us what a long time is.

Hi Sam

A little more info required, first what version of Video Studio are you using.?

When you “burn” and I assume you mean burn a standard DVD then the files required are Mpeg2.
Now you can create these by Share Create Video File –DVD which will render the project to Mpeg2
To burn a dvd using these files you start a new project, nothing in the timelines, Share Create Disc-Add video files, adding the Mpeg2 files. No further conversion of the video file.

Method two
From the completed project you can Share Create Disc, this will also burn the DVD but the process to convert the video to Mpeg2 will take place as soon as you hit the burn button, this can be seen as Convert Title in the progress bar. So during the burn process is it the Convert title that is taking the time?

The time it takes to convert the video depends on may things
The speed of your pc
The length of the project
The type of files being converted
The type of menu used, Thumbnail types are much quicker than Smart Scene.
Creating a Mpeg2 from a Mpeg4 or from Mov will take longer than converting a Mpeg2 to Mpeg2.

Can you tell us what type of video files you are working with, right click a clip in the timeline and select properties , what are they?

I mentioned your PC, can you update your profile to include your computer specification, thanks
