uploading to facebook

Post by Viddynick »

Hi all - me again I'm afraid. I have just created another film for my local art society. They now want to upload it to their facebook site - Help please! They want the video file but I have two problems: I see Facebook more or less recommends MP4 format for greatest success! Firstly I need to "send" the video file via email (to the person who runs the Society's FB page) so I need to consider the size for this purpose. It's only a 2 minute film so I converted it to .FLV but it is now 20.1MB. I have tried converting this .FLV format to MP4 in Format Factory but it comes up with "failed to decode". Any advice on format for transporting through email would be helpful - and any advice on what I need to do at this end for the person to upload to the Society's FB site would be helpful. Do I need to send any embedded code etc. Sorry to be a dunce on this but I am gradually learning - thanks to this site.

Cheers whoever has the patience to help here.

Thanks
Viddynick.

Couple of points - if you want an mp4 file why not export one direct from VideoStudio instead of trying to convert from another format - VideoStudio is more than capable of producing mp4 files.

Even so the file is likely to be on the large side for e-mail so why not do what I do - upload the video to Facebook yourself - or get yourself a free Vimeo account and upload to that - then put a link to the video on the Facebook page.

or you could burn the file to disc and physically carry it round to the person who wants to upload it and let them get on with it - presumably as it is a local society they are not to far away.

There are also sites like this :- https://www.yousendit.com/info-features ... pc-4000765 which allow for the transfer of large files from user to user

Hi Brian
Thanks for your prompt response to my problem! I cannot load direct to FB myself as their page is run by another. I agree about creating the VF in VS itself and have now done this. I think you are right - best to burn and send. Hopefully that will then be OK for them to load. I do have a You Tube account myself and am getting bogged down with an earlier problem when I had to get a Video File to someone in Spain for loading to a website! I sent .FLV through a special server they ran but they still had difficulty getting the video on to the website - in the end we had to link to my personal YT account which I am not keen to do normally.
Thanks for recommending that website - will take a look. This now seems too simple! I will send them the disk and wait for comeback - I can't believe they will be able to load it to FB without problem!
Thanks again for your help.
Cheers,
Viddynick.

Hi

Windows Live Essentials has a free sharing section called SkyDrive.
You can upload files limited to 100Mb, but that is quite large enough if you are using Flash.
Share with anyone of your choice simply by sending a link via e-mail.

In addition Windows Live Messenger has the option to transfer files of any size provided both parties are on line.

Even so 22Mb may e-mail ??????

Hi guys, thanks for your responses again - appreciated. Got over problem of sending the video file - going to burn it! - now having prob uploading to FB - thought I would try and load it to my site first so I know it will work for another person on their site! I have the vf in MP4 but FB say aspect ratio should be between 9 x 16 and 16 x 9. How do I ensure this ratio in VS? This is where I am a dunce - I usually follow the automated route and choose either 4.3 or 16.9. Will this meet FB criteria given figures above? - or is there somewhere in VS to customise the aspect ratios - currently I can't find it. Hope you'll bear with my ignorance at this juncture but it is a real learning curve for me - despite I can make good films. LOL.

Cheers and thanks to anyone in advance who has the patience to put me right.

The standard video aspect ratios are 4:3 and 16:9 - you can set either of these in VideoStudio - if you set 16:9 in VS then Youtube should accept it.

Hi

Video Studio X4 project properties use widescreen 16:9.
View “Settings” to make sure the 16:9 option is selected, your clips will display in the preview screen as 16:9

If you wish to convert to MPEG4 use Share – Upload to Web – YouTube-Mpeg4 Hd 16:9
Video duration limited to 15 minutes. After the video is created you can if you wish simply cancel the upload.

The video will use 1280 x 720 as its frame size, using a calculator you can see that these settings are indeed 16:9.

Flash Video
If you wish to create a flash video then you have to use the “custom” option,
Set the frame size to 1280 x 720 using the User Defined option, again this is 16:9
The “fps” should reflect your original video files settings.

You may wish to consider using WMV types, Share Create video File WMV HD 720 25p
Either of these formats can be uploaded to You Tube.

Once you have decided on the type you wish to use, create your own template using the Make Movie Templates Manager, this will be available to be used adjacent to the “custom” option.
--------------------------------
Uploading to a web site is a little different as some coding is required, try Flash or WMV types
I would have thought that function would be the web sites administrators.

You can however link the YouTube video to play on your web site which is possibly the easiest option.

Trevor

Cheers for all that information - I have been successful in uploading to You Tube and then to my (and another's) website without problem. My problem is now with Facebook. I have to send the Video file to another person to load to the Facebook page they run - am going to burn the file to disk to enable this. Thought I would practice first by loading the video file to my own Facebook page - I have tried MP4 set at 16.9 (2 min film) but somehow nothing happens, though I know I am following Facebook's correct procedure. Have disabled pop up blocker and anti-virus in case that's the problem but still no success. I will print out all that you have written as know it will come in handy - thanks again.

Thanks guys again for your invaluable help and quick responses. Currently, I am still struggling to load my 2 min film to Facebook (it simply hangs in the early stages) but it may be gremlins, rather than my film. I have turned off pop up blocker and my anti-virus prog etc. still with no result. Have now decided simply to send the video file to the person who is loading to the Club website and keep my fingers crossed that it doesn't come back to me! A good learning curve I guess but tiring!

Thanks again
Cheers

Hi Nick

Sorry but I don’t use face book so cannot test the upload procedure.
Are you able to upload to You Tube, If yes then the PC is ok in uploading the files.

How large is the video file and what is the file size limit that you are allowed to upload.
At 2 minutes it should be small enough to e-mail, possibly ????????
Do Facebook require a particular type of file?

From Facebook regarding Videos
Facebook wrote:Videos are usually large files, so they can take more than few minutes to fully upload. Here are some tips:

Make sure your video is in a supported format. You'll have the best luck with the MP4 format.

Make sure your video doesn't exceed the size or time limits you see on the upload page.

Check that you're using the latest version of a supported browser.

Remember: Trying to upload the same video multiple times won't speed up the process. While you wait, you can open up another tab.

Uploading a video shouldn't take more than a few hours. If you're still having issues, please let us know.

Facebook wrote:Generally, the best format to upload is H.264 video with AAC audio in MOV or MP4 format. H.264 currently offers the best video compression available, and due to file size limitations, this format is the optimal choice for Facebook Video.

To avoid the rescaling of your video by Facebook's encoder, use a file with the larger edge of the video not exceeding 1280px. If your video is less than 1280px in size on the larger edge, try to keep your dimensions to multiples of 16px for best compression.

Keep the frame rate of your video at or below 30fps.

Use stereo audio with a sample rate of 44,100hz.

Hi Guys

Thanks for your further responses - good of you all. Yes, I have successfully uploaded to You Tube and our own website without problem! - so, as you say, felt I would be able to do so to Facebook! I am well within the criteria they set for their video uploads - format, time, size etc. Have double checked all this so am very confident all is correct in that direction but no success since I last posted here. I am giving it up for a couple of days and aim to return with a fresh start, with the information posted here at my right hand - thank you again. I will try - for all your sakes - not to post again for a few days! But this forum is so very helpful and a big draw when in trouble!

Cheers
Nick (Viddynick).
