I've been working with VS for a couple of years now and I still don't get the m2ts (AVC) format of my camera.
I'd like to understand the best way to convert them to an HD format to use for great quality internet viewing. (youtube, my own website, etc.)
Let me start with 2 simple issues.
Why is it that I can't set my project properties in VSX4 to the same settings as the source video? Does that even matter or is that simply the settings for the editor and doesn't translate to the final video.
Second, what is the Highest Quality way to convert my project for Youtube HD, assuming the videos in the project have the following properties.
Video Codec: AVC
Frame rate: 60i
aspect 16:9
Audio: Dolby 5.1
size: 1440 x 1080
Finally, is there a good tutorial out there somewhere that I could learn this stuff "beginning to end" so to speak?
I like to understand what I am doing more than just knowing "what buttong to push"
Thanks in advance for any help you can give!
M

Re: I still don't understand - m2ts TS (AVC) Format 1440 x 1
Hi
Video Studio provides a template (Mpeg4) suitable for upload to You Tube.
Share – Upload to web—Youtube HD option. Creates a file using 1280 x 720, I find the quality excellent, try it for yourself. I have tried other options but seem to end up with Mpeg4
For the web site maybe consider WMV or Flash again to HD 1280 x 720. formats that everyone can view.
Project Properties, well it is not essential to match the video properties to the project properties, Providing the project is using widescreen 16:9 then your video will display correctly. There may be an exception if you wish to take a snapshot.
1440 x 1080 is widescreen 16:9 even though the mathematics don’t reflect that.
The forum has a tutorial section, however video editing is such a large subject that there are many.
What do you need to know, how to use Video Studio or understand video formats, probably both and there is a lot of information to absorb.

Re: I still don't understand - m2ts TS (AVC) Format 1440 x 1
Thanks a million for answering!
I reached a point where, for more than just the practical knowledge of producing videos, I want to know more about the actual formats. I'm curious to know what's exactly happening to my videos during conversion, and I've also been toying with the idea of upgrading my camera. So the links provided will give me a good starting point.
MP4 is what I've been using, good to know I was on the right track, although It does default to 1920 x 1080. One time YouTube did warn me about the aspect ratio of a video I was uploading, but that might have been a fluke because it didn't happen again.
Also, I have been using flash for my site. However, in my confusion between 4:3 and 16:9 I calculated a ratio of 1423 x 800. God only knows how I arrived at that, but it fit my flash player so I stuck with it.
I'm going to go back to 1280 x 720 again and see if I can figure out how I got that messed up.
Again, THANKS for your input
Cheers!

Re: I still don't understand - m2ts TS (AVC) Format 1440 x 1
Hi
Frame sizes and aspect ratio.
Before High Definition the frame size for a Standard DVD was 720 x 480
These sizes were used for both 4:3 and widescreen 16:9. you may well ask how this can be.
When we think of images we think square pixels, but some video does not use square pixels, the pixels 720 x 480 are stretched in to a rectangular shape, one size for 4:3 and one for 16:9.
The process is called Non Square Pixel Rendering.
Video for the internet does not use Non Square Pixel Rendering, the pixels are square so your 1423 x 800 will use that shape, and if you use a calculator your video is 16:9 (as near as) a little non standard size but still 16:9 aspect.
The introduction of HD provided us with other frame sizes, 1920 x 1080 uses square pixels and is 16:9, 1280 x 720 is the same.
The third option 1440 x 1080 uses Non Square Pixel Rendering to create the 16:9 shape.
In general all video now uses widescreen 16:9.
--------------------------
Creating a video file
Share Create Video File-choose an option – Mpeg4 HD—view the details in the lower properties panel, use the mouse to select the text/copy and paste to a word doc.
Now choose Share - Upload to Web-YouTube-Mpeg4 HD, again copy the details to the word doc’ to compare
Get familiar with these properties it will help you understanding what’s actually happening.
Now go to Settings Make Movie Templates Manager and create a template to the 1280 x 720 Mpeg4 settings, and whilst there create a Flash template, you will have to use User Defined to set the frame size.
