I am sure that you must be able to do it...surely..
but how can you see images side by side, so that the original is on the left and the edited on the right?

Create a new version with INSERT key, move focus to this version
(optional) if you have already done some edits hit CTRL-R to clear edits on this new version
select both versions, turn on multiimage view with M key.
PS: you can also use command "New version from defaults". So you can skip CTRL-R step.

Just seconding Andy's suggestion & noting that the original will end up on the right & edited on the left unless you do the CTRL+R on the original rather than the newly created version if the order matters to you.
