I think a lot of the argument comes down to how much work you want to do. Do you want to simply convert RAW into tif/jpeg or do you want to 'manipulate' the photo to get a result that you desire.
A good example is Nikons ViewNX. It will take your RAW and give it the same look as if you had shot a jpeg. But ViewNX, IMHO, falls short if you want to 'play' with the RAW. If you want to 'play' then you need a fully functioning program such as ASP.
Somehow I think shooting RAW is a waste of time if you don't intend to 'play' with the RAW file. If you want to 'milk' all the information in the RAW then avoid the 'simple' RAW programs and learn to use a program such as ASP.
