Display & rendering of Boris Graffiti images in X4 ultimate

Post by Colin_ »

I recently bought x4 ultimate (version 14.2.0.23) and have come up with the following problem and was wondering if anyone else could repeat it or had a solution to it - I apologise for the length of the post.

It involves the display of images/video imported directly into Boris Graffiti rendering at the wrong size when viewed/rendered in X4.

To demonstrate the problem:

1) Run Videostudio X4 Ultimate

By default my project properties are set to:

PAL (25 fps)
MPEG files
24 bits, 720 x 576, 25 fps
Upper Field First
(DVD-PAL), 16:9
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 8000 kbps)
LPCM Audio, 48000 Hz, Stereo

2) Drop a Black colour onto the timeline.

3) Drop Boris Graffiti FX onto the black colour.

4) Customise the Boris Graffiti effect.

In boris graffiti
--------------

5) set 'project settings' to

720 x 576 PAL D1 DV Wide screen

in the 'Project' drop down menu.

6) add a 3D plane.

7) Change track media to 'Still image file' and open a jpeg file of your choice.

8 ) Scale the image to fit the screen and click on apply to save the changes to X4.

In Videostudio X4.
-----------------

The photo appears looking the same as it did in Boris Graffiti - OK everything works as expected there then. Now:

9) Change the 'Program Settings to AVI mode (keeping the sizes the same for consistancy)

PAL (25 fps)
Microsoft AVI files
24 bits, 720 x 576, 25 fps
Upper Field First
Uncompressed
PCM, 48.000 kHz, 16 Bit, Stereo

The display now shows the photo at a differnet scale (ignore the aspect ratio change)

It turns out that the photo can't be displayed properly when X4 has a AVI set in project properties.

If you repeat the process with X4's project properties set to

Film (24 fps)
Microsoft AVI files
24 bits, 1920 x 1080, 24 fps
Frame-based
Uncompressed
PCM, 48.000 kHz, 16 Bit, Stereo

and Boris Graffiti's project settings to

1920 x 1080 HDTV

After applying the Boris Graffiti changes the display in X4 is wrong. If however you scrub the current time indicator over the image the image changes to the correct size while you are holding the mouse button but reverts to the wrong size when you let go - implying to me that there is a bug in X4.

If you use text in Boris Graffiti then the text is always rendered the correct size in X4 so if you put text over the picture X4 shows the text at the correct size and the picture wrong.

So what I want to do is import pictures into Boris Graffiti for use in a 1080p project in X4 - Pan and zoom of a still image in graffiti is much higher quality than pan and zoom in X4

I'm using a windows 7 laptop (laptop display only).

Thanks.

Colin.
