[plugin] Nuance Colour Grading tool released!

Post by seanmpuckett »

Nuance, my colour grading plug-in for AfterShot, is now available! Nuance is the new name for Brenda from the Bibble Era. It adjusts the look and feel of an image by shifting the colour, tint, brightness, and with an upgrade vibrance and contrast of up to 24 distinct colour "patches." Nuance is designed to enhance the look of the image as a whole, and can very easily and quickly build a unique colour treatment to give a special look and feel to your photography.

Head over to http://nexi.com/nuance to download your copy today!

Please excuse the question, but I guess I don't really understand.

Your web page offers what appears to be 2 different plugins. One is labeled as free and the other says that there is a range of suggested prices. That implies to me that there is some extra functionality in the second that is not in the first, but I am not sure that this is true or, if it is, what the functionality differences would be.

Are there differences between the two products? Or is the second the same as the first and you are asking for a donation?

And thanks for the link to the download.

Most excellent!

I can tell you guys that the additional controls are well worth the money, and will be well worth paying for again.

Thanks Sean! Any chance we'll see Ansel for ASP?

Here's a couple of presets for Nuance I put together. Though these presets use the vibrance and contrast functions in the unlocked pro version of Nuance, they'll work just fine in the free version. You just won't be able to adjust those settings. I want you to see what you can do!
Screen Shot 2012-02-15 at 3.17.14 PM.jpg
The first one (second thumbnail above) is called Ice Queen. It reduces vibrance and contrast in the skin tones and shifts them towards a cool lavender. It also reduces vibrance in the highlights and shadows somewhat. The idea is to create a cool, smooth, icy portrait preset.

The second one is a bright, vibrant colourful Polaroid simulation. Lots of pushed vibrance in the highlights and shadows, lots of pushed contrast, and shifts towards purplish reds and pale peach like Polaroid film that's way, way out of date.

Nostalgia and Nuance are basically my go-to tools, and making presets like this is a great way to speed up your workflow. You could also consider sharing your presets with others! Nuance is great for that because you can do so much with just one tool, and it's almost infinitely tweakable.

Edit: presets updated for Nuance 1.0.7, replaced here http://forum.corel.com/EN/viewtopic.php ... 30#p240875

Hi Sean

With Brenda Pro ,when we choose a color,(Ex I chose green then click on the green at right)
we had access to a color chart where we found all the colors and could change even the color chosen. It is possible under ASP?

Good to have you back

Here are two more Nuance presets, Firelight and Matrix.
Screen Shot 2012-02-15 at 6.51.20 PM.jpg
Firelight uses a dozen different patch adjustments to add warmth to the highlights, cool the shadows (that "blue/orange" thing popular in movies, only not as extreme) and continues by lightening and adding saturation to most of the warm tones while slightly desaturating and lowering the luminance of most of the cooler colours throughout the image. It's really nice for making clinical shots look friendly.

Matrix turns everything vaguely greenish, especially in the shadows, and almost all colour is removed except for red, which is really pushed up. Interestingly, skin tones are "pinned" so they're not turned too greenish, though they are desaturated and darkened somewhat to add a bit more gloom. Designed as an homage to that movie!

I blush to ask such a newbie question, but how do you install those .xmp file or otherwise get them to work with Nuance?

Few things.

1) If you're using Linux and the Info/Upgrade button says you are running "1.0.5" please redownload the package and reinstall. I goofed up the packaging and there's a stale build in there. (I really should do more release testing.) I don't think there are any critical issues but just to be safe you should be running 1.0.6.

2) The XMP files go in your AfterShot Pro AfterShot/Presets directory, which is in your user data folder. You can find this by doing Help->System Info and you'll see something like
Application vers.: 1.0.xxxx
Product Name: AfterShot Pro Registered
Built on: xxxxxxxxxx
Platform: Mac
Language: en
App Path: /Applications/AfterShotPro.app/Contents/MacOS/AfterShotPro
System Home: /Applications/AfterShotPro.app/Contents/Resources/supportfiles
User Home: /Volumes/Data/AfterShot/Settings
Prefs Home: /Users/seanmpuckett/Library/Preferences/com.corel.AfterShot Pro.plist
Processors: 2
The important line is User Home. Presets will live in ../AfterShot/Presets
Copy the XMP files there. You may need to restart AfterShot to see them appear though.

3) Tiling issues would be a problem but a surprising one. I wonder if the tiles only appear on the first image you use Nuance with, or if they always appear on that preset? For what it is worth, I've only ever seen a black tile pop up occasionally when restarting AfterShot. If you can give us a screenshot, Charlot, that would be helpful!

Thanks.
