How to resize image to fit screen?

Post by Gumper »

I'm a new user and cannot find how to re-size image in the user manual. I'm sure I have everything set up wrong.
I'm making a time lapse movie from images taken on my 35mm camera.
I want the movie to be wide format 1080p.
Once the images are imported, I have the extra space on the sides of the screen due to the difference in format of the 35mm images which I expected.
But I cannot find how to zoom the whole thing in to fill the wide format screen.
I have tried the FX/Cropping filter but it only crops inside the existing area and doesn't zoom the whole thing in to fit the window. What am I doing wrong?
Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Using VideoStudio X4 SP2
Windows 7 Home
original files - Jpeg@3504x2336
Settings (16:9)
Project properties read:
MPEG files
24 bits, 720 x 480, 29.97 fps
Upper Field First
(DVD-NTSC), 16:9
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 8000 kbps)
LPCM Audio, 48000 Hz, Stereo

you have a basic problem in that your original images are 16 x 8 instead of the 16 x 9 used by standard widescreen TV - that means you have two options - one is to just distort your images to fit the screen - only you can decide if the distortion is enough to worry about - to do that follow the procedure below (pictures in overlay track) but just right click over the image in the preview screen and choose 'fit to screen' or just pull the sides outwards.

The second and more normal option is that you have to lose a little bit of your image - to do that your images must be in the overlay track - not in the top video track - click on an image and it will appear in the preview screen as a picture surrounded by yellow lines and yellow boxes - using your mouse cursor pull one of the corner boxes outwards to make the picture bigger - if you reach the edge of the preview screen before the picture fills the screen then move the cursor more over the picture ans it will change to a four pointed arrow - click and slide your mouse until the picture goes slightly off screen then pull the yellow corner box again - keep repeating until you are happy with the fit in the screen. Do not pull the yellow boxes in the middle of each side as that will distort your picture.

Having got one right it is now easy to do the rest - if they are all in the time line first click on the one you have adjusted and then right click - from the pop out choose 'copy attributes' - now click on the first image after that - scroll to the end image and hold down shift while left clicking - this will select all images and they will be surrounded by a yellow line, now right click over that block and this time choose 'paste attributes' and they will all change size. - click in another track to deselect all images.

you may need to do some fine tuning to individual images - if for instance something important has gone off the edge you can click on the image in the timeline then use your mouse to move the image in the preview window to get the view you want.

That did it. Thank you much for the info. :D

So I assume then the Overlay Tracks are what I want to use to do various editing in and use the main Video Track for stuff that needs no extra tweaking done to it.

I should say, the second option was perfect for what I needed.

It is totally optional which tracks you use - some of the members here use only the overlay tracks and never use the main track - my personal preference is to use the top track for video when it is a simple matter of editing and cutting and moving video clips about and adding titles etc. and use the overlay tracks for photos/images etc.

The bottom line is to use whatever tracks work for you - just remember that anything in any overlay track will appear on top of the tracks which are above it in the VideoStudio window

That makes sense. Sounds like a good work flow. Thanks for the quick reply also.
