X4 limited to 10000 pixels

Post by Jean-Luc »

I'm not able to work on big images with X4.
Maximum size is 10000 pixels.
On X2, it was 32767 pixels.

Yes this has been complained about many times. Even during the beta test. No one knows why they did it short of forcing a more manageable memory footprint.

However, anything larger than 10000 pixels squared might seem unreasonable to some though I can understand the desire to do so. That's like 2 feet and 6 inches worth of photo at the highest resolution necessary for print. And traditionally the larger it gets the less likely you are to want to view it up close. If you're viewing it from farther away then you decrease the resolution thus decreasing the number of pixels required.

It's as close to a happy face as I can put on the situation. Though the fact that I could no longer make my Fat Head in PSP was annoying.

Also on the limits thing, the highest dpi you can set is 2540 dpi (1000 pixels per centimeter). Although this is a minor annoyance, I can't see needing to set anything to that high of a dpi, but my 14+ year old scanner produces images above that dpi. Even the most average of today's scanners produce higher dpi's and pixel counts than what X4 can handle. Most of todays dSLRs are still within X4's range though, although if you want to get creative and add to an image you have to downsize the file first.

Maybe Corel really doesn't want to compete with Adobe? Why else would they decrease the file size you can create when camera manufacturers are increasing the size of the files with every new version of camera that comes out?

Why such big size is needed?
When working on A1 size with many details (like a graphic genealogy tree with photos), X4 is not possible.

In what way? A1 is 23 x 33 inches (roughly, I forgot the exact decimal values) and at 300dpi that's still under the 10,000 pixel per edge limit for the canvas.

True on my laptop things really slow down at that size but the slow-down is PSP on this week laptop, not the 10,000 pixel limit.

I sometimes work with panorama files that are larger than 10,000 pixels wide. I haven't since going to X4 but this would definitely be an issue next time I'm working with a pano using more than 4-5 source images..... Glad I found this thread, least I know now that I need to keep X2 running for the big work.

10k may not seem like a limitation for some, but it only takes 4 images from a 10mp camera to exceed 10k pixels on the long side... Think about it Corel.

Yes, exact. But when coming from RAW, there is a problem. I'm preparing more explanations.
There is also a bug during the resize if you need 300% for a task and reduce to original state after the job. Resize is limited to 10000 pixels and distord the photo without warning.
See my explanation (in French) on my website dedicated to PSP bugs:
http://www.pspbugs.com/x4sp1-deloption1/index.html

PS : on my laptop, no slowing down but I'm running with a i7 multi-core and 8 Gb ram.

Best regards,
Jean-Luc

I am a graphics designer and have always used paint shop pro. now I cannot as I cannot use the sizes I need. I design poster and shop front name boards. some of these can be over 6 feet long and over 3 feet high.

oh well, back to adobe photoshop we must go. a shame as paint shop pro is easier to learn and use for my staff
