DVD Movie Factory Pro 7 Taking FOREVER to Burn Blu Ray

Post by mrmidi »

Hello Corel,

Today - I am at a customer location where we are trying to use Corel Movie Factory Pro 7 to burn a Blu-Ray video disc.
The source file is an MPEG-2 HD clip recorded at 100Mbit/sec. using NewTek Tricaster. This is a 4:2:0 MPEG-2 Standard Profile.

The source file is 66GB in size - due to the fact that it was encoded at very high bitrate. It is 90 minutes of MPEG-2 HD.

Movie Factory Pro 7 - is apparently converting the file down to 35Mbit/sec. - or actually 25Mbit/sec. (I used "customize" to set it for a lower bitrate so it would fit - because the default setting of 35Mbit was a bit too high for 90 mins on a 25GB Blu-Ray disc.).

Unfortunately - it is taking absolutely FOREVER to convert the bitrate down from 100Mbit/sec. - to 25Mbit/sec.

I've been watching it for an hour and twenty minutes - and so far it is only at 3%!

If this is considered "normal" - this is not going to be an acceptable solution for us.

Any idea why it is taking sooooooo long to convert and burn??

I know that high bitrate MPEG-2 HD files are large and cumbersome - but this is ridiculous.

Thanks in advance,

Frankly, I am not sure you are going to get an answer to this one as there are not too many users who would have tried what you are doing using MF7. Most of our users here (and remember this is a user to user forum) are more interested in DVDs rather than Blu-Ray, and to the extent that some *are* burning Blu-Rays, it is usually with video from their camcorders which does not require the sort of down-conversion you are undertaking.

Personally, although I have had MF 7 since its release, I have never used it for Blu-Ray, just DVDs. Moreover, I have only ever tried downconverting Blu-Ray footage from a dual-layer Blu-Ray to fit on a single layer Blu-Ray. And I used a combination of AnyDVD and DVDFab for that. And the whole process took over 6 hours on an i3 computer. So I am not particularly surprised by the time your own process seems to be taking -- though it sounds as though it will be much longer than my own experience.

IMHO MF7 is now a somewhat dated program, given the speed with which Blu-Ray technology is developing. I don't know what Corel's plans are for any upgrading of the program -- though two years ago they were on the verge of dumping it entirely. But apart from the two programs I mentioned above, I have no idea what other programs out there might do the job better or faster.

Thanks for the feedback Ken.

Unfortunately - DVD MFP 7 never made it past the 3% mark during the conversion/burn process - so I just cancelled the burn operation - although it refused to cancel - so I had to perform a "forced reboot" of the system.

I think I have a solution that will work good for this situation.

We sold a copy of Canopus Procoder 3 to this same customer - and Procoder 3 is performing the conversion from 100Mbit/sec MPEG-2 - down to 25Mbit/sec. MPEG-2 at a fairly decent pace + it provides a realtime video preview while converting - so I know it didn't "hang" during the conversion process. So it looks like I'm okay for now on this topic.

I'm confident that the resulting file will work fine in MFP 7 when burning to Blu Ray. If not, I'll post another question tomorrow.

Hey - while we're on the topic of MFP 7 - I have another general question. . . . . .

I really like the Menu Templates that I see are included for Blu Ray - however I only see a total of 4 templates - and the "menu templates tab" says "ALL" . . . .

How do I go about adding additional templates? I want to see and access as many factory provided templates as possible . . . . but finding it hard to believe that Corel is only including 4 of these.

Are additional templates available for purchase from Corel?

Thanks again.

I have not use Movie Factory Pro 7 to create a BD, so I cannot comment if the time that you posted that is took an hour and twenty minutes to complete 3% of the project is normal or not, since there are many factors to consider on the time it will take to complete burning a BD.

However, you may want to try VideoStudio Pro X4, since it also has the capability to create a BD and it's a much updated software than Movie Factory Pro 7. You can download the trial version at http://pnoy.me/coreltrials

As a general rule I use VideoStudio to do all my video editing, conversion etc and Movie Factory to import this final video file and make no changes. Then add a main menu and create a DVD.

I too got caught with a lengthy time to make a blu ray becuase there is a default setting "create a menu capter" that needs to be switched off or else you get a very nice, moving picture menu for and every each capture. I had over 100 chatures.
I make sure that "do not convert compliant MPEGs" is on and that my imported video files are compliant before outputing the project to a folder.

All my raw videos are 25,000 bps. So I select 8000 bps for standard DVD videos and 25,000bps for Blu Ray in VS.
