Nikon NEF files don't rotate. Bug?
I noticed my Nikon NEF files do not auto-rotate to portrait orientation for photos that are shot that way. All my other software (Nikon ViewNX2, Picasa, and Photoshop Elements) all orient the file properly.
Is there something I'm missing in the ASP settings?
If not, do other camera maker's RAW files have a similar problem?
I've also noticed that NEF files I previously "starred" in ViewNX2 will have the stars show up in ASP, but ONLY if they have 5 stars. Fewer stars, and they don't show up in ASP. Seems quirky.

Rotation works just fine for my D70,D200,D300 and D700 files.
No Idea about the stars, I don't use ViewNX for that.
cheers

Works for me as well (D7000). I have a problem that my lenses are recognized when using RAW but not when using JPG, but that's a different issue.

D90 and D7000 rotate automatically for me.

Did you enable the AUTO IMAGE ROTATION from your Nikon settings? I'm also using a nikon SRL and my images are not rotation automatically until I enabled that settings from the camera.

Re: Nikon NEF files don't rotate. Bug?
Thanks to everyone who replied.
I'm using a D300 and a D70. For both cameras I have autorotate enabled, but I do not rotate the images when they are displayed on the back LCD.
After reading everyone's responses, I decided to go back and preform a test using straight-from-the-camera (both D300 and D70) files. What I found out is that straight from the cameras, ASP rotates the files correctly. But if I then call up the files in ViewNX2 (my preferred batch RAW processor prior to ASP) and edit them, the files are no longer rotated when I go back to ASP. I know ViewNX2 adds the edit information to the NEF file instead of using a sidecar file of some sort. Apparently in changing the NEF file, ViewNX2 messes up the orientation setting that ASP uses. So it shouldn't be a problem for any future assignments, I'll just have to watch whenever I go in to any images that pre-date ASP.
Thanks again!

I decided some time ago not to use any of Nikon's software, and this is a very good illustration of one of the main reasons why. (Poor UI and overall speed are others.)Paul Wossidlo wrote: I know ViewNX2 adds the edit information to the NEF file instead of using a sidecar file of some sort. Well, once you download images from the card directly (or using software that doesn't modify content of the files it downloads) you can always make them read-only so that nothing writes to them ;-)ferdinand-paris wrote:I decided some time ago not to use any of Nikon's software, and this is a very good illustration of one of the main reasons why.
