How do I drag'n'drop my DAM Assets?

Post by Tadjio »

One of the things that I do a lot is drag and drop images between programs.
I've realised to my horror that I can't do that in ASP :(

What's the point in commiting to a program to manage all my precious assets if I can't drag'n'drop out of it?
Do I have to open Windows Explorer (or ZoomBrowser) in order to do so?

Ah yes. This is one of those missing DAM features I mentioned in the other thread.

I don't understand - can you give an example? Do you want to drag a file in File System into another program such as PSP?

... and there is no copy and paste function in ASP neither (yes there is c/p of settings but not of whole images). ASP uses versions to handle what would normally be a copy/paste processing of images (sounds very similar to XML programming/scripting). What I mean is a new version is nothing but a place holder for the master with new settings applied. So to pass the photo you would have to pass the photo and settings with it. Meaning you would have to render the photo and then pass it along which would be destructive to the original........

I am not saying it shouldn't happen I am just saying apparently there is no structure behind it right now....

You have put your finger on it.
My suggestion/frustration cannot be solved in ASP v1 SP1 but perhaps in v2.

I think ASP could (should) have the structure in place to 'render' any image so that it can be copied and pasted or dragged and dropped either within ASP or out to another program.

This would require some parameters (just like Output Batches i.e. Type, Quality, Metadata etc.) to determine the format of the rendition.

For what?
The whole logic in AS is not geared towards that for one simple reason. It is a workflow engine.
This drag and drop stuff between programs is for small scale apps, but falls totally flat on its face once you have some load.
The effort to implement that vs. the benefit for a few just does not make that likely to ever show up.

And within ASP it already works.

Only in the File System as Drag'n'Drop not Copy&Paste, and not in the Library Catalogs at all, which is inconsistent.

Copy and paste is much more useful for image settings don't you think? How often do you do that with files vs. image settings?
It would be totally broken to waste the usual keys for files (and inconsistent with any other raw converter or DAM for that matter that also use those keys for various settings).

And who cares about moving files in a DB that is not usable anyway....
Let's worry about that fix when the basics work.

To be honest, I haven't yet tried to copy image settings yet. For me Ctrl+C still means Copy File!
I'm not suggesting a change of use for the keys, but a right-click (Edit) context menu option to Copy (or Cut) the Image File and another to Paste it, as well as my suggestion for Drag'n'Drop to other programs.

This statement of yours worries me :o

Are you saying the embedded SQLite databases are suspect or (as I presume) that the Library Catalogs in ASP are neutered ?

What could one do in Bibble that you now cannot do with Catalogs in ASP?

I did read your note that Metadata searches can now span multiple Catalogs in the Library.

Did you try that in Office yet?
Seriously, Copy is context dependent.
I'm not suggesting a change of use for the keys, but a right-click (Edit) context menu option to Copy (or Cut) the Image File and another to Paste it, as well as my suggestion for Drag'n'Drop to other programs.
Does not really fly in the context of this application. You can already move or copy via the mouse.

Nothing like that....

Nothing. The catalogs in Bibble where already stillborn, basically the limited same functionality.
I did read your note that Metadata searches can now span multiple Catalogs in the Library.
That already worked in B5.

But:
  • There are no DB queries. Only the silly browser which does not have enough functionality perform a simple query like "show me all images from Rome not shot with a D200".
  • No wildcard searches
  • Hierarchical keywords and flat keywords mixed in the same namespace, resulting in a UI mess and no way to keep one of the sets private. As hierarchical keywords are non standard, they are a pita to export and agencies are not too keen on them.
  • No saved searches
  • No virtual folders, so you can not put a custom hierarchy over the DB (could be done with hierarchical keywords if they where separate, but right now it is too messy to contemplate)
  • No auto detection of changed folders for auto or confirmed rescan of folders.
  • No scripting, therefore no automation for complex tasks (Like "show me all of my images that are online at SmugMug but are marked private" for example)
  • No incremental name completion when entering keywords
  • No variable substitution when entering keywords

Changes B5->AS
Some more changes in AS over B5:
  • Autolevels was moved further up in the pipeline so it is less sensitive to changes.
  • Catalogs are now by reference only.
  • Plugins have access to EXIF information
  • Double clicking on an image will zoom to 100% with the cursor position centered
  • Watched Folders are gone
What did you mean by items 2 and 5 in the above list?

I also read the following, assuming it only related to ASP:
afx wrote:In contrast to other programs, Bibble can search and work with all open catalogs.
Therefore you do not need to stuff all your images into one catalog.

Tadjio wrote:[*]Catalogs are now by reference only.
B5 had catalogs where files where moved into it. A rather silly idea.
[*]Watched Folders are gone
B5 could monitor folders for new files and execute batch queues on them.
