Video Studio 11 crashes on Vista
I purchased Ulead Video Studio 10 for my son about 4 or 5 years ago and installed it on his Vista machine. When first installed, it worked great. After a few months, it began freezing and/or crashing his computer. I was unaware that he was having problems. He just kept rebooting and then continued until his project was completed, or just got frustrated and quit the project.
When I discovered he was having these issues, we found and ran the available Ulead patches, which improved things a bit for a while. Then, having issues again shortly thereafter, we upgraded to Video Studio 11, which again improved things for a short while. He has been unable to complete a project within the last year. Video Studio is at a point now where it freezes constantly and Vista pops up the message “Ulead has stopped working” with a “Close Program” Button. Sometimes it takes 10 or 20 minutes to freeze, sometimes it freezes instantly and sometimes in between.
My son now has the opportunity to edit a weekly video for a family friend. Unfortunately, he is unable to accept the work because he can’t get the program to work.
What information can I give you that will help you to help me figure out how to get this software running again?
Thanks,
Video Dad

Re: Video Studio 11 crashes on Vista
Hi Video Dad
Some things to consider….
Quick Time has caused some problems, random crashes.
Install an earlier version, I believe VS 10 came with Quicktime not sure which version.
VS X4 provides version 7.5.5, Quicktime updates will install the latest versions, however installing 7.5.5 will impact on I-Tunes.???
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL26
-----------------------
Believe it or not the auto update of Adobe Acrobat Reader caused a problem for a few users.
------------------------
Not sure about VS 11 I do not have that version, but feel same as Quicktime above.
-------------------------
Further information, the details of the types of video you are using, where they came from.
If downloaded from the internet may cause problems.
There are so many types of video files that some do cause problems.
HD may cause problems as VS10 / 11 may not fully support all types?
-------------------------
Editing HD, you may need to enable Smart Proxy—F6 I do not think this option causes any crashes.
-------------------------
some issues with Direct X, (not crashes) recommend manually installing the latest version

Re: Video Studio 11 crashes on Vista
At this point, all I can suggest that you try the latest version of VS which is VS X4, you can download and use the full working version at http://pnoy.me/coreltrials.

Re: Video Studio 11 crashes on Vista
Quicktime has been updated regularly over the years that the software has been giving us problems. The version currently installed is 7.7.80.34. These crashes have occurred with all versions of Quicktime since 2007 or 2008.
The types of video being used are usually imported directly from a Canon ZR65 via firewire. The software sometimes crashes during import and sometimes doesn't. More recently it has crashed during import.
Though sometimes the attempted work is HD, usually it is not.
I believe that there is an issue with Vista and Ulead, or the hardware configuration and Ulead, or some combination of both. Last time when I researched this (in 2009) many other people were having similar problems with Vista. There has to be a solution for this.
I understand that this software is comparatively old, but I spent a fair chunk of change on it when I bought it and when I upgraded it. When it worked, it did exactly what my son needed it to do and it did it well. I'm hoping someone who has had these crashes or has helped someone solve these crashes with a Vista machine or otherwise can shine a light on things that I might try that could get this software going again.
Many thanks,
Video Dad

Re: Video Studio 11 crashes on Vista
Do you know if the (from memory) three update patches for VS11+ were installed (one of which makes if VS11.5+)?

Re: Video Studio 11 crashes on Vista
Hi Ken,
I believe we only applied one patch which was called "Ulead VideoStudio 11 PowerPack VS11_PATCH". This was done on 2/26/2009.
I've searched for additional patches, but found only a Ulead FTP with patches for 10, I couldn't find anything for 11.
Thanks,
Video Dad

Re: Video Studio 11 crashes on Vista
No -- that Power Pack patch was around 55 MB in size, but there was another called UVS11_Patch_Eng.exe which was 27 MB, and a third which was huge (290 MB) and started with MO2_Corel_Plus. There was also a fourth which was only required if users were having trouble installing VS 11 in the first place.
Note that some of these patches only worked if you had the VS11+ (Plus) version, and not the vanilla VS11 without the Plus sign.
The problem is that I understand Corel has now removed updates for versions earlier than VS12 (X2), which does not of course help people in your situation.

Re: Video Studio 11 crashes on Vista
Hi Ken,
I don't see an About menu in the title bar to see the precise version, but it does say 11 PLUS in the splash screen. I assume that this is the Plus version.
Is there somewhere that I can see the version number and be sure we are missing these updates?
Are you aware whether any of these updates resolve the crashing issues?
If we are missing theses updates, is it possible that I can still obtain them if I contact Corel support or customer service and explain that we looked for updates and couldn't find them and then stopped using the software because it kept crashing?
Thanks,
Neal

Re: Video Studio 11 crashes on Vista
From memory, I think the About Corel VS which gives the the build number was displayed when you clicked the ? button in the top right of screen.
I can't recall what the patches did specifically, but I think the Power Pack was the one that upgraded the version to 11.5+ and added more functionality for AVCHD editing. Can't recall much about crashing, since mine was pretty stable.
As for contacting Corel, that may be your only alternative, unless someone here has the updates and you have a website or something that they can be downloaded too. They are too large for normal sending as an email attachment, obviously.

Re: Video Studio 11 crashes on Vista
Hi Neal
Did you re-install quick time to version 7.5.5.
If not then i do recommend that you give this option a try, i provided a link to QT in my first reply.
I have a few patches that I can make available
UVS10_VistaPatch_5in1.exe
UVS10_HD_BurningPack.exe
UVS10_SP1_5in1.exe
JP06-0919-01_UVS10J_CANON_HDV_5in1.exe
UVS10_Eng.pdf
As for VS11, only one as I do not have this version installed.
UVS11_Patch_Eng122507-03.exe (27.67Mb)
