Deleting parts of a video permanently

Post by spotmom »

I am looking at having to buy more hard drives if I can't figure out a way to do this:

I want to "physically", cut videos apart and delete unwanted parts from the hard drive itself. I probably have many gigabytes of video that has no use but taking up space. I am sitting at 6 terabytes of drives right now and I am getting short on space. Granted half is the originals and half is my backups, but I need to trim out some of the junk if I can.

Are there any programs that can do this?

Thanks

Well do you have VS? If so that will. However I think what you want is some way to do this without using an editor, correct? If so, then there is no such program. What you need to do is load your video that you want to cut and dispose of parts no longer needed, then do your cutting, ie; editing. Now if you're wanting to keep it in the original format, then just create a new video file in that format. Smart Render can help with the speed in processing.

Once that is done, then just delete the original video file. You must do this for each and everyone though, so it will be somewhat time consuming. Several people do this when they edit, creating a video file in the same format, having all the parts no longer needed removed.

I have VSX4 and Sony Vegas 11 Platinum so I have that part covered.

I never thought to edit then delete the original. Is there anything special I should do to keep the original quality? I am a real stickler for keeping the best quality I can, especially after all the years with a crappy camcorder that took bad videos (best at the time, though), I just never want to go back!

Maybe the "Smart Package" facility in X4 can help you. This lets you save ALL the files, including video, needed for a project to a designated folder. You could do this for the projects you wish to keep, and then delete all video files from their original locations; the ones needed for your projects will have been stored elsewhere in the smart packages.
