All subsequently produced .jpg & .tiff are expendable output even if produced by ASP.

If we agree that this is the essential difference between RAW; and .jpg or .tiff, (in this context) then all that's left
is to figure out is how to get the most benefit out of each program - ASP and PSP. Vive la différence.
In principle we agree! :)

In practice I have many 10s of thousand of JPGs that pre-date my use of RAW. These are an 'Asset' too.

I am indeed trying to get the most benefit out of each program - ASP and PSP.
In fact I am increasingly just using ASP and find I am using PSP less and less. If I am in ASP I am happy about calling PSP as an External Editor.

However if I am in PSP, I am unable to read and process an image that has previously been processed in ASP if either the Image itself has changed and has not been Output by ASP or, more of concern in this thread, if ASP has modified the MetaData for example the Star Rating, Title, Comments or Copyright Notice.

I agree that it would be beneficial to have information such as rating transferred between the applications. It seems to be very simple to implement as there is provision for this in JPGs and TIFFs. Poking about for information on EXIF and IPTC I came across this statement in Wikipedia: “Most image manipulation programs keep the XMP and non-XMP IPTC properties synchronized.”

It seems to me that it would be very simple to have the information discussed in this thread written into the EXIF of the image file at the same time as it is written in the XMP. Raw files continue to retain their integrity. Users are satisfied. My two cents worth.
