How do you just have titles on black and not over the images

Post by dcmax »

Whenever I create titles they are placed over the images in the timeline and the time line shoved along, How do I simply make a title sequence on black.....?

You just need to choose a colour (in your case, black) and insert that in the timeline as a background rather than using a video.

Then click the Titles button and click on the blank black editing screen, and adjust fonts etc as usual

It still means the first image of your film is shifted up to the beginning of the timeline when you put your first edit in and is now under the black title.. I want a title sequence with no images showing.. and then the start of my film.. In other words if you looked at the timeline you would see for example 4 seconds of titles with no film above them in the timeline, then in the edit you would see your first piece of film appear above the right of the titles.. The only way i can see of doing it is to put some junk footage above the titles and totally drop the sound on this footage...

It's probably easier to see it work in a new project without your video on there.

So if you drag and drop a black screen into the empty top video timeline, this will be your background to your titles. You can adjust the time this background stays for by dragging the edge of it right along the timeline or you can adjust the time on the left handside of the screen by upping its duration number.

(I'm not currently at home, so bare with me). I think if you change the library menu to display "Titles", then click in the "Titles" timeline, you should get a message appear on the working screen (something along the lines of, insert text here)

Double click where it says insert text, and type your intro text. Once you enter it, you should see a bar appear in the Titles row in the timeline. Obviously you need both the black screen and the titles to stay on screen for the same amount of time, otherwise you'll end up with titles over any video that you add after the black screen disappears.

Don't forget you can adjust how the titles appear or move and the speed they appear or move too, this will help the timing of the black background too.

Hopefully this makes sense.

Yes but you cannot have blank spaces in the top track - - so what you need to see is four seconds of titles in the title track with 4 seconds of plain black color in the top track immediately above them - followed by the first clip of your video - your music can then start wherever you want in that sequence. You can insert the color block even if you have already put your video in the top track - just drag and drop the color block from the color library and drop it on the beginning of your video which will move along to make room for it.
