Capture/Editing Query

Post by Roadgiant »

I wonder if I can ask for some advice, I use VS PRO X4,at the moment I am still using DV tape & Firewire, to capture from my Canon camcorder. I am thinking of stepping up to a JVC GZ-HM655BEK that has 8gb of storage and also takes SD (SDXC/SDHC/SD) and would like to have a bit more understanding about capture and editing before making the purchase.
Can the SD cards be read in the built in cardreader on my PC or does the Card have to stay in the camera and be read from there?
Also will I run into any problems capturing/editing AVCHD(seem to remember reading in the past about people having problems) is that still the case or are things a lot more straight forward now? Hopefully I can continue to use VS to edit video from this camera.
Is video capture from the camera done by USB or is that only for stills?

The spec of the camera lists the following interfaces :-

SD Memory Card Slot • (SDXC Compatible)[26]
USB 2.0 High-Speed Data Transfer to PC •
1920x1080/50P Output •
HDMI(R) output (Mini) •
HDMI-CEC •
AV Output

Thanks in advance RG

Hopfully someone will come with a better answer to the AVCHD question.

If the 8GB storage card is removable you can use a multi card reader (or similar device) to transfer (not capture) to PC. Probably easier to just plug the camera in..no difference really except for less fiddling around.

The problems if I recall correctly had more to do with processing power and without knowing what you are running hard to advise. Best way is to shoot a sample and test it out on your system. Share your observations, fill in your PC spec form as that will help others too.

Thanks for the reply, I havn't bought the camera yet, just thinking about it. The 8Gb is built into the camera and there is a slot that will take SD (SDXC/SDHC/SD) cards up to 64Gb just going to fill in my PC spec form.

Your computer should have no trouble editing AVCHD, though preview in Project mode may get erratic. You can get around that by using SmartProxy. But either way, you should have no trouble outputting AVCHD. My own Quad is older than yours and I have no trouble with it.

The only thing you need to know, though, is that your prospective camcorder can film in full progressive 50p mode. While X4 can now produce 50p video, and you can play it back (as I have) on my HDTV via USB stick (or external hard drive) connected to your Blu-Ray player, 50p (and 60p) video is still not part of the international Blu-Ray disc standard at full 1920 x 1080p. The standard only allows 1280 x 720p 50/60p to be burned to a blue-ray disc. Your camcorder also has a higher bitrate (27Mbps?) than can be produced by VS (20 Mbps) but the quality will still appear excellent to the naked eye. See recent discussions here about 50/60p video, including in http://forum.corel.com/EN/viewtopic.php ... 14#p239214

I would just check that your inbuilt card reader can read the altest fast SD cards. Older ones can't.
If it doesn't, you'd just need to buy a new card reader, very cheap and use that, or use the camera, not my preference.
