Dear All,
I am wondering if it is worth using smart proxy when working with HD video files and a fast computer. With my old laptop, smart proxy was absolutely necessary in order to get smooth playback in the preview window. Now that I have a new computer, it seems to manage just fine without smart proxy, even when working with 1440 x 1080 AVCHD files. I notice that the computer does run a bit hotter than when not using smart proxy (CPU temp is 65 - 70 degrees centigrade when editing) but that's the only side effect.
Is there any other reason to use smart proxy? Not using it saves a lot of time in that I don't have to wait for the proxy files to be generated and they don't take up extra space on my disk.
Thanks and regards,
Bruno

Look at my pc specs. I don't use proxy files, but I also use preview window in very small pieces. Rendering is quite fast, and I tend to check my video stories that way, rather than previewing an entire story... Al

I absolutely use them but my projects have hours and hours of raw video with over 1k clips and 4 audio tracks.
If I was just editing someones home video that was a few mins long I probably wouldn't bother.

Thanks for the replies, looks like the best guide would be to see when the playback starts to slow down or get jerky, which will be difference for different computers and projects.
