Urgent - VS9 exits by itself after click on "capture vi

Post by Alex01 »

I've just installed VS9, and I'm extremely frustrated by the software bugs and problems with VS9.

The problem is repeatable according to the following steps:-
1. Start up VS9.
2. Click on Capture in the menu option.
3. Click on 'capture video'.
4. VS9 exited by itself.

After the above step 3, the hard disk then appeared to be very busy doing reading/writing. Then after about 30 seconds, VS9 exited or closed down by itself gracefully without any messages.

I've not been able to capture video from my camcorder, and do any meaningful video editing at all...

I'm going to return the VS9 product to the retailer if I'm not getting a suitable answer or fix from Ulead as soon as possible. It's just not acceptable for selling a faulty software product to the public.

How is your camcorder connected? What capture device (if applicable) do you use? Which capture plugin are you using? What are the rest of your system specs?

Let's not worry about the camcorder or plugin yet....as I could not even get into the "capture video" screen. VS9 just exited by itself...

That is exactly why I'm asking which capture plugin you are using.

If you search the forum, you'll find that people have had problems with UVs shutting down unexpectedly when the wrong plugin was selected. Granted that shouldn't be the case, but those are the facts.

In fact, I could not even get into the plug-in screen to tell what plug-in has been selected because VS9 exited by itself when I tried to go into the "change plug-in" option.

You don't change the capture plugin from the Capture tab, it's on the Tools menu...

Yes...I was meant to say in the tools menu.

You go to Tools -> Change Capture Plugin and UVS exits?

If you have a boxed version of UVS, go to Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs, select UVS, and then click on the Change/Remove button. When the UVS installer starts, select Repair.

If you have an ESD version, try uninstalling and reinstalling.

Thanks THoff...

Yes...UVS9 existed by itself when I select "Tools/Change Capture Plugin".

During the past few days, I have already tried to remove UVS9, re-install or repair UVS9. However, everytime I did the reinstallation, UVS9 worked for the very first run only. That, the "Capture Video" function worked only on the first time I ran. But the second time I ran UVS9 "Capture Video" or "Change Capture Plug-in", the exit problem re-occurred.

Hi Alex01

I have a similar problem.
It turned out to be associated with the Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1 Windows 2000

Please read the following posting:-

http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtopic. ... sc&start=0

Un-installing this product worked for me. (thanks again GeorgeK)

I have reported the problem to tech support, just now waiting for a solution.( i may grow old in the meantime )

If you find this to be your problem, please report the problem to ulead

Hope this helps

Thanks very much for your kind assistance and tips Trevor...

The "capture video" function and "change capture plug-in" function are now working after I uninstalled the Windows Installer 3.1 on W2K.

The problem would not have occurred if I had not tried to update the Windows security pathces which include the Windows Installer 3.1 from Microsoft Windows Update regularly.

I would suggest ULEAD to do more product testing on UVS9 by constantly updating to the latest Windows Security Patches via MS Windows Update.

The security updates aren't causing the problem, it appears that it's the new Windows Installer that updates some shared component that causes UVS to break.

Getting the boot

Post by Rob »

I have the same issue with window XP. when I go to capture it kicks me right out. This dosnt happen all the time though, sometime it does but on occasion I get 3-6 captures before it boots me out.

Do you think the windows 3.1 installer would remedy this as well? And how do I delete it?>

Thanks

Hi Rob

just edited this post by adding the red text.

Read this thread the part from jgonick reads:-

Update. Very interesting. In the capture tab, if I import from DVD first. (just let it pull up the info) The Video capture works afterwards.

http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtopic. ... 1244#21244

I have installed that windows installer again and can confirm that I can now capture provided I select Import from DVD/DVD-R first.

Don’t think you need the rest of this post now.

Windows Installer does appear to be the culprit, but it may also be a combination of things.
I feel that my capture card may also be a contributing factor.
(just got a gut feeling)
The Freeze also occurs when I select Change Capture Plugin
VS 9 may be auto changing / resetting the plugin each time I select Capture Video, switching the capture source to my tv tuner.
Running VS 9 without a capture card works ok, when I select capture video I get the message ‘ no capture device installed’.
I can capture via Firewire from DV cam-corder.

My set up works ok with VS8

O S Windows 2000
Capture Card ATI All in Wonder 128 pro
120 Gb hard drive
1 Gb ram

Be aware that removing the Windows Installer may cause some other programs on your pc not to perform correctly.

That was the type of warning that windows showed during uninstall.

Its your choice.

My Computer / Control Panel / Add and Remove Programs

At the moment I am running Win 2K without the Installer, and haven’t noticed any problems as yet.

( As I type this. Windows Auto Updates has just prompted me to update to the Installer.)
