Sub-Forums

Post by Trevor Andrew »

Hi Guys

We are intending to create sub-forums and several have been proposed.
I have read some of your posts and the opinion differs with some saying no need, others say there were to many on the old forum.

"Plug-Ins", "Linux", "Mac" and "Bugs" have been recommended, but what do you think, Can you discuss this and give us some ideas to your needs
Maybe the Bibble Mods and Admin can help out here requirements, I assume they have the best understanding of the forums requirements.

I am unsure about dedicated OS threads, not sure if the traffic is large enough. Plug-in and bugs would be nice.

I would like to see a photograph-centric show-off sub-forum; the one called "Member's samples" seems to be video-oriented. Maybe rename that to "Member's video samples" and create one "Member's photo samples" ? I would think the PSP users would like to show off too?

1) Plugins - definitely needs its own subforum, so it is easy to get an overview of plugins and associated issues
2) Linux/Max - I think a common forum for both OS' would be great. They don't each need their own, it would just be nice to filter the OS specific issues onto a separate forum.
3) Bugs - As long as no developer reads the forums I see no reason (also no harm) to have a specific forum for bugs. It would be great to have a public bugtracker that the developers use, but that is likely unrealistic.

I don't see a reason for all the other old bibble forums (camera specific forums, getting started, questions...).

Possibly there could be a locked "FAQ" forum where especially useful or interesting posts, or posts containing frequently asked questions and answers, could be archived to provide quick access to the most useful posts. I think that would be a good idea, but it would probably mean more work for mods.

A bug report forum is valuable to alert users to an issue, whether or not developers read it directly. Other users can anticipate the problem before they encounter it. Also allows more users to test and verify the problem, perhaps even find solution.

Hi!

Besides all discussions about possible forum substructures vented in this thread, http://forum.corel.com/EN/viewtopic.php?f=90&t=44927, I think the suggestions given above, added with some additional ones, would make this list:

Plugins
Linux
Mac
Windows
Bugs
Wishlist - request for features
Show-off for photos (not videos)
Tips and tricks
Lenses and their corrections
Cataloguing
Cameras (all brands)
and, for developers, non-public subfora for plugin development - such as it is today.

Various reasons for having something like those above have been discussed in the long Forum Structure - see link above

The number of fora at Bibble Labs might have been a little too many, but having too few will not be productive either, as the forums until now have been rather active, and probaly also will be so in the future.

My 2 cents...

Cheers,

Lars

What I have found to be especially helpful in the Bibble forums besides general questions are:
Plugins
Selective adjustments, although a lot of good info related to this I garnered from Tips and Tricks.
Tips and Tricks
Bugs and Omissions
I really enjoy seeing other people's work that they edited in Bibble, especially when they show why and how they changed original file, so add Show Off! to my list.
Cataloging and Asset Management, as this is my weakest area.

Thank you.

my favorites for subforums are

General
Plugins
Plugin Development (perhaps restricted to plug devs)
System specific (Windows/Mac/Linux all together)
Show Off
Tips and Tricks
Bug reports
Feature Requests

I would also like a Wiki with integrated FAQ.

- general info
- plugins
- Linux+Mac / Windows
- bugs and omisions
- tips an tricks
- Feature request, would also be nice to have as a sub-forum, mostly for you as moderator.

The nice things of sub-forums is that you don't get overloaded threads with off-topic discussions.
Thx.

(Sigh... If it has to be...):
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE as few sub-forums as possible!!!

The Bibble forum had so many posts in "wrong" sub-forums that a cat (especialy Bibble the cat  ) could not find it's kittens in it any more (that's a Dutch saying in fact. Don't know if something similar exists in English, but I'm sure you understand  ).

And as this board is very well moderated, I fear that those moderators would have to move threads to the correct sub-forum all the time.

So again: if it has to be; please as few sub-forums as possible. I already read suggestions of over 10. I feel a shiver down my spine.

My suggestion?
- General
- Plugins
- FAQ

But I prefer... NONE  .

I would agree there is definitaly no need for the long list of subforums as per bibble. I dont think there were enough camera /brand specific post to warrant separate forums. A plugin forum would be handy, if the current download versions could be on sticky threads or so. If you see how many posts, feature requests and bugs take some space as well.

A linux forum would be handy so i dont have to read it (windows user :-) If people start going on about distributions and all kind of stuff i dont understand, I am happy to miss it....

I think it would be best if there were no more than 3-4 subforums. If you look at the bibble forum structure, you can easily work out which subforums take the most messages. Since bug reports dont do too much , a sticky thread with a link to the bug reporter might work just as well.

I agree with the above argument but at least this subdivision should be made:

* Tips & Tricks (with howtos, presets et al)
* Plugins
* System-specific

Not sure about a 'Bugs & omissions' section since the Corel developers seem to excel with absence ... ;-)

Plugins
Bug Reports (Will Corel staff get these?)
Feature Requests

These would be most useful.

There is no mechanism which automatically forwards bug reports to Corel Developers - but you seem to be lucky in the Aftershot pro forums in that Mr Copley who is a product manager at Corel is visiting frequently and I would guess he is manually retrieving comments especially from the "what do you like" and the "Wishlist for next version" topics which he started

This seems like a pretty good list here. It should break up the topics well enough without getting the over-fragmentation of the old Bibble forum. I'm not too sure how useful a Bugs section would be if nobody who can do anything about it looks. Perhaps a sticky reference to Corel's official submission mechanism.

Threads started in the wrong area & OT messages within a thread are an unfortunate fact of life; that boils down to users too lazy to find the right spot or use the search method. I see that in every forum I've ever gone to.
