Corel aquires Roxio

Post by Natal »

There was a news release today saying that Corel has aquired Roxio along with their product line, including Creator. http://www.corel.com/corel/pages/index. ... d=11100047

Since Creator is one of VideoStudio's competitors, what does this mean for us? Are they going to try to integrate the two products or let VS fade into the sunset?

Good questions. I guess only time will tell what Corel is going to do with the new products they acquired. It might be a good thing to replace the disk burning portion of VideoStudio with the Roxio version. I hope that they don't phase out VideoStudio's editing package though. I have used the Roxio program, Videowave, and found it more limited than ideoStudio. Other people's opinion may differ, but I think VideoStudio is a superior product in the editing suite.
Maybe this acquisition had something to do with how long it has been taking for VS X5 to come out. Just speculating here. I have nothing to base that suggestion on. :) We'll see what the future holds.

The funny thing for me is that I started out video editing with Video Wave. But found it at the time difficult or at least non-intuitive. I the discovered VS 7 and haven't looked back.

As for the disc burning module, well the last time Corel tried changing it was with X3, and that was a major disaster, so I guess I am a little less enthusiastic than you about trying another change.

I am also rather mystified by your statement:
Maybe this acquisition had something to do with how long it has been taking for VS X5 to come out.
When on earth did you expect a new version to come out when this one has barely been on the planet less than a year??

As it happens I have a version of Roxio Creator which came pre-loaded on this PC - haven't attempted to use it for editing but I was pleased to find it does include an .iso image burner and copy disc both of which I have found useful. I had a look around it and it would appear to be a good programme to have.

I am just hoping we don't have another surge of Roxio users descending upon us looking for their forum.

Hi Ken,
You are quite correct, VS X4 has only been around for just under a year. Somehow it seemed longer than that to me when I wrote that. About the burning module, since Corel went back to the burning module they have in X4, I have had no problems with it. Maybe I should just be happy to keep something that works well for me. :) I guess I will have to practice being patient.

I am also happy to see Roxio/Creator come over to this camp. Both of them came installed on my very first PC back to Version 4 or 5, forget which, and I have found both programs to be useful for differeent reasons and activities. I just upgraded to Roxio 2012 and each version improves on what was already there and adds additional features, some good and some I just don't need. As far as I am concerned, nothing will replace VS for me in editing video for economical reasons as well as ease of use, great product productions and I could go on, unless they bring back MediaStudio (doubtful). My only hope is that Roxio will continue to be updated and given equal attention as VS as both are good programs, but a I said, for different reasons. Maybe I will be able to upgrade them both and get a package deal now that Corel has acquired it. Up to now, I have had to pay virtually the same amount for both programs of which I have been happy to do as both products have produced what I have needed them for. Just my two cents worth on the merger. Be well. :)
