Hi,
I was wondering if there is a way to convert an image from color to black and white in Aftershot? I mean in terms of the file itself only containing grayscale information? When I use the black and white plugin, the image is grayscale but the file is still a color file.
I usually convert all black and white images from my camera to "Black and White" files to save file space.
Thanks!
How do I convert an image to a grayscale image file?

ASP is none destructive raw converter, so it won't modify the source file.

The only real way to do it is to export the image in the desired format, delete your original in aftershot, then import the converted file.
I'm not sure that Aftershot can convert to a proper black-and-white file, so you may need to export the image and then edit it in a different program, like Photohop or Gimp.

Once you converted a file to single channel BW, AS will not read it...

if you export JPGs, the jpgs-algorithm will take care of that - same values in the channels will be compressed accordingly.
and dont think of ASP as a "converter" .. it's a non-destructive editor, so you only create output when you need it. and unless that happens there is no need to "save" a file.

Thanks for info!
Too bad it's not possible to export for instance a grayscale tiff file with a dot gain profile, but it seems that Aftershot doesn't support this.

from my experience with grayscale tiffs - and that goes way back to film and drum scanners - i can tell you that dot gain profiles are not very good to represent grayscale data, unless you are specifically creating output for a device that copes with them very well. and how many pictures are you printing on a raster machine?akvik wrote:Too bad it's not possible to export for instance a grayscale tiff file with a dot gain profile, but it seems that Aftershot doesn't support this.
if you need/want to keep your images as grayscale tiffs the best thing is to use a luminance based grayscale profile and save in 16bit. i got mine from installing the test version of QuadToneRip software and copying the appropriate profile - called something like "qtr grey lab" - to my image editor. this allows for direct and 100% lossless conversion from L-Star 16bit color tiff images.

Use XnConvert multiplatform batch converter, Imagemagick script, etc.
