I'm not sure I understand your question . . . however, from the catalog create a new version in a file (you can always remove it later). Then look at the same file in the File System. Versions created via the catalog are stored as files. So if you remove folders in the catalog and then recreate the catalog folder (now renamed) any versions created from the catalog will be retained.
