Capturing Video with VSProX4

Post by rhelmod »

I have purchased a Sony DCR TRV480 to play Hi8 tapes and convert to Digital Video. My camera came with a USB cable that plugs into the camera in the video jack. I want to capture the video using VSProX4. What do I need to do to capture it? Do I need a driver for the USB. I dont seem to have a firewire jack on this computer but it does have a 1394 labeled jack in the back. It has several USB jacks. Can you guys give me some suggestions on how to do it?

Coincidentally, I too have the DCR TRV480E (E for PAL), and believe me, forget about the USB connection. That is only for low quality streaming mpegs. To get the best quality, you absolutely must use Firewire and capture in the DV format. You then edit the DV and finally convert it to DVD-compatible mpeg-2. If your computer indeed does have a port on the back labelled 1394 (or more correctly IEEE1394), then that is the Firewire port. Now all you need is to buy a Firewire cable, making sure it has a small plug at one end (for the camera port) and a big one for the computer end.

Ken: Ok I have the proper cable but VSPX4 says I dont have a video capture driver. What driver do I need to capture video from the Sony TRV480?

First I suppose you need to go into Windows' Device Manager, and see if you have IEEE1394 list there. If so, that should tell you if you have a driver listed.

The video capture driver for IEEE1394a is supplied by windows, so it's odd that it reports no driver installed.

BUT, you say your computer does not ahve IEEE1394a (firewire), so I guess you mean you have the right USB cable. This I'm afraid does not work.

What does this jack look like? Have you Googled for images of a firewire jack? Does it look the same?
