Is there a way that you can convert a 4.3 import to a 16.9 output? I have imported a musical from a disc which is recorded in 4.3. I would like to output this as a widescreen video. I have tried putting in on the overlay track which gives a better output result but still has the borders each side.
Thanks.

not quite sure what you expect to happen - you have a number of options 1. as you have found out is to have borders each side, this does not produce any distortion or loss of part of your image . 2 is with your video in the overlay track pull each side out to fill the screen this will make all your people and images much fatter and will produce distortion visible on your TV - and 3. again in the overlay track pull the image from the corner to maintain aspect ratio so that the top and bottom go off screen but you fill from side to side - that way you could lose peoples heads and/or feet.
It is often done professionally by overfilling the screen and then panning around the image on screen so that the important bits remain centred on screen - that's a lot of work and you cannot see all the image on the screen at the same time.
If you are not prepared to have borders then you must accept some distortion or loss - the borders do not have to be plain they can be any colour or pattern to harmonise with your video.

Hi
Can you confirm that the video actually has black borders or not.
Go To Settings- Preferences-change the background colour from black, green will do nicely
Now add the video to the overlay track, the video should show as a smaller size surrounded by the green background.
Do you see any black bars around the video frame?
Does the video although small look in proportion?
Read this guide although written with an earlier version is relevant for X4

Re: Converting 4.3 to 16.9 output.
Hi Trevor, thank you for your reply. Yes my 4.3 video clip does have black borders, but from the links you have given me I think I can make it look ok in 16.9 without the subjects looking like 24 stone. I do photoshows using Kizoa and they only give you the option of a 4.3 output. So I import them into VS and output them in 16.9, which sometimes is more successful than others. Onwards and upwards. Happy New Year to you. Wyn

Hi
With the clip in the overlay track, select it, then right click the preview screen and select Fit to Frame.
The black border will still show.
Drag the frame diagonally, then resize by using the corner yellow handle, this should keep the frame in proportion.
Right click and anchor Centre-Centre
If you see the black bar repeat the process.
Now right clip in timeline and select copy attributes, Using Shift + Click select the last clip, this should select all
Right click to Paste attributes.
All should show as first.
