which i'm sure you'll agree is pretty amazing given what he had to work with. i asked him how he did it:
Thanks flagpole
Merry Christmas by the way :-)

as I said before I am useless at explaining, but here goes

to start with I had to borrow a forehead as there was just nothing to work with there in the photo.

So that I roughly resized so it was about the same then I colour corrected to the photo best I could till it was close using the RGB sliders and also contrast Gamma etc. then overlayed it onto the photo and cut away what wasn't needed, then again played with a mixture of colour matching, darkening and blending, and also has to soften it a bit as it was too sharp

I then cloned the good eye and part of his cheek, flipped it and pasted it over the other eye. I made it partly transparent so could line it up better, then took the transparency off again once it was in place.

Then again it was a lot of messing about with matching the colour and tone to the good part, also had to colour correct and darken some bits like the hairline, and eyebrow as they were too bright and that gave them a orinagy tint that didn't match the rest of the photo, and also add a little darker tone copied from the stubble to the cheek as just coping the colour to some parts made it all looked a bit too pink and flat at first

Also went back and flipped just the pupil of the eye so the highlights matched and tried to blend the eye area in a bit better so it didn't look like it had been just flipped over, so lost a few of the laughter lines on that side and softened that area a touch.

Then it was go back and and try to fix all the little bits using the same tools that you see after you think it's done.
Repeat this last stage 4 or 5 times and that's about it :-)

That's the sort version. I did say I'm not much at explaining Sorry

also I use Paintshop Pro, I tried but never got on with Photoshop.

That is amazing, and lots of work I'm sure! Nick_2005 did a flawless job! Especially matching the color. I probably would have thrown the image away!

I've heard of copying parts of a face and pasting it to fix problems, but never heard of anybody "borrowing a forehead" from a separate photo. That's hilarious, and awesome at the same time.

Near flawless, if you look closely at the ear you can see some clone patterning. Also the light source is a bit too abrupt for where it starts and ends. Technically not a problem because there are situations where that lighting situation would occur, but to keep it convincing (and for flow) leaving the ear alone and fading the light highlight would have been best as it creates flow and really merges the head into the rest of the image. As it is his head actually seems to stand out more now.

Otherwise, way better than I could ever hope to do. I don't match colors well at all. It's an excellent example of what you can do with the right tools and know-how.

It is' superb work. I'm left dumbfounded at this.

Good eye Levi! I didn't realize until you said that that I can view the image full scale. Now that you point it out I can spot the cloning on the ear, and it looks like there's a rough spot in the center of the forehead (around it is pretty smooth, and then the center and above the eyebrows are a little more rough). That's acceptable IMO. I agree that it is a little strange with female having a little spotlight and the male being in shade. It's definitely a HUGE improvement though. Actually makes a throw away image usable.

i don't deny that there is stuff that you can see that is wrong with it. it's just that IMHO, in the totality it is amazing.

i consider myself to have some skills but it has sort of reinforced to me that as much as i may be able to work the program, the fact that i have no discernible artistic talent is a limitation.
