Disc Image is larger than indicated project size

Post by evadi »

I am creating a DVD with menus in MovieFactory 7 which consist of 3 wmv video files. All 3 video files are 720 x 576 aspect 4:3 with a bit rate of 2.1Mbps. The total size of these files together is 1.4GB.

When I add them to the a new project and create the menus the size of the project indicates that I require 2.8GB, which is still much less than required for a DVD, so I continue to the final step in the process. I always burn an image first so further DVD copies are quicker, but once it is finished my image is 7.3GB. Why?

The project settings are the same as the video files;
720 x 576
aspect 4:3
bit rate 2.1Mbps

I am at a loss, any help would be appreciated.

Thanks for your reply.

The total length of the dvd is 1hr 45mins

Not sure what information you are asking for when you say DVD settings?

To burn a video DVD, the international DVD standard requires that your wmv files be converted to DVD-compatible mpeg-2. And that format is far less compressed than .wmv, which basically means that the mpeg-2 file will be much larger than the original wmv.

What skier-hughes meant was: what are the properties you selected for the conversion to DVD-compatible mpeg-2. If you just used the default settings, which include a bitrate of 8000 kbps, this will produce a file about the size of the one you actually got. And of course that will not fit on a single layer DVD. You would have to use a dual layer DVD.

To get your 1 hr 45 minute project to fit on a single layer DVD, you would have to reduce the default bitrate to around 4500 kbps, or perhaps 5000 kbps if you used Dolby as the audio format.

Thanks for that Ken

My DVD settings were changed from their defaults to 4:3 Standard Quality which means I get;
720x576
aspect 4:3
bit rate 2500kbps

This gives me a total DVD size of 2.8GB. If I change the settings to default the total size of the DVD which is indicated at the bottom of the screen is 6.08GB. So it is clear that MovieFactory is calculating the expected output size and therefore I would expect that the Disc Image created would reflect that. This is what I can't understand.

Any other suggestions?

2500 kbps is an extremely low bitrate for mpeg-2, and I don't know where you got it from. Even a bitrate of 4000 kbps will at best only give you quality equivalent to decent VHS. As I said above, for a 1 hr 45 min project, you could use a better quality bitrate of 4500 or 5000 kbps and it should still fit. But don't use that 2500 kbps.

I would assume that when creating a disc image, you uncheck all options except the CREATE DISC IMAGE? Did you check the green bar indicator and see if it exceeded the 4.70 GB threshold and did you check the project type if it was set to DVD 4.7G?
